Helping Urban Mission rewarding

February 17, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

To the editor:

While reading the Sunday Herald-Star last November, I came across an article that said the Urban Mission needed more people to adopt children for Christmas.

With only a short period of time before the deadline, I knew what I needed to do.

I went to work the next day and put a memo together saying that I was collecting money for a family with a set of twins that needed a nice Christmas.

In less than three weeks, I was able to raise more than $300 myself, and my maintenance man, Jeff McDevitt, and I went to Kmart to do our shopping.

I had so much fun doing the shopping, just knowing how excited the children were going to be on Christmas morning, that I wanted to thank the people involved in helping me make Christmas for the children a little brighter: Joseph Constantini, Jefferson Metropolitan Housing Authority executive director; Wendy Barr, supervisor; Gerald "Yonk" DiLoreto, a member of the JMHA board of directors; my father, Darrell Gaylord, who is always there for me, no matter what; John McDevitt, Jeff's father; our union; and my co-workers.

A special thank-you goes to the two employees at Kmart who were so helpful: Lois Moffat, who held the bikes that we wanted until the following week so they would not be gone, and Brandon Finley, who helped Jeff and I get everything out to the truck. Your kindness was so appreciated.

In the beginning of December, I and my co-worker and friend, Aleta Monroe, volunteered to help with the actual toy distribution. I can honestly say that next to the birth of my son, it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.

I will start earlier this year with the collection, as soon as it first appears in the paper.

For those of you who have never become involved in something like this before, do yourself a favor and adopt one of the families of children this year. You will see just what I mean.

Thank you, and let's hope that 2013 is a better year for all of us.
