Contract renewal for VFD declined

Bloomingdale operations are being shut down

BLOOMINGDALE - Wayne Township trustees have decided not to renew their contract with the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department and will rely upon the fire and emergency medical services of Belvedere and Unionport.

Township Trustee Brian Wilson said the Bloomingdale fire department had not been filing fire reports for the past 18 months as required with the state fire marshal's office. Representatives of the fire marshal told trustees the township could be fined for the contracted fire department not making reports, Wilson said.

The Village of Bloomingdale also has not renewed its contract for the fire department, essentially closing down its operations.

Robert Herrington, Jefferson County 911 director, said Wayne Township informed him on Feb. 27 to stop dispatching Bloomingdale for fire and emergency medical calls.

Wilson said he feels comfortable the Belvedere and Unionport fire departments can handle the fire and medical calls in the township.

The fire department has seen an internal fight during the past five years that resulted in two groups each seeking an injunction in common pleas court. The two groups held a separate election of officers.

Common Pleas Judge David Henderson in 2010 declared the elections null and void and ordered a special master to conduct an election.
