Nogay wins again

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Weirton Madonna graduate Eddie Nogay tossed a three-hit shutout as the 25th-ranked Washington and Jefferson baseball team swept a doubleheader from Gallaudet (Md.) on Friday at Lake Myrtle Park, 1-0 and 7-0.

Nogay struck out eight and did not walk a batter during eight innings of work as the Presidents needed an extra frame to down Gallaudet during the opener. He retired the final 10 hitters he faced and did not issue a walk. The shutout was the second this season for Nogay and fourth of his career, tying him with Mike Trumpower (2007) for second all-time at W&J.

Nogay and Game 2 winner Brian O'Neill also pitched when W&J blanked Bethany twice to open the season in Washington on March 9. Only Sam Mann has thrown three shutouts during the same season in Presidents' history (2005).

Nogay is 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA in 21 innings. He has fanned 15, walked one and allowed two earned runs. Batters are averaging .133 against him.

Johnson selected for game

CANTON - Edison High School graduate Cory Johnson has been selected to play in the Ohio vs. Michigan Senior Bowl April 20 at Fawcett Stadium. Johnson was selected as the long snapper. He played the last three seasons at Bowling Green University.

"As we approach our fourth year with the Senior Bowl, I am amazed by the talent and awareness our event has generated in just its short history," said Todd Oliver, President of GameDay Management.

Ohio schools to vote on new OHSAA proposal

COLUMBUS - The sanctioning body for prep sports in Ohio is proposing a new way to classify schools.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association's proposal would count students on a team's roster who are from outside that school's district in football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. If adopted by a vote of the schools, the new rules would take effect in the 2015-16 school year.

A petition asking for separate state tournaments for public and non-public schools in the state has been withdrawn, with backers of that now behind the new OHSAA proposal.

For years, public schools have complained that parochial and non-private schools have an advantage in Ohio because they can draw athletes from a much larger area. The new criterion would address that.
