OVAC softball pairings set

WHEELING - The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference pairings have been set for the softball semifinals Tuesday and Wednesday at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Youth Sports Complex.

Five games will be played each evening with the finals set for Saturday at the same complex.

Both Class 5A and 3A semifinals, along with one Class 2A will be played Tuesday.

The other Class 2A tilt and Class 4A and 1A will be held on Wednesday.

On Field 3 Tuesday, No. 3 Shadyside (9-4) will take on No. 2 Wheeling Central (15-7) at 4 p.m. in Class 2A.

The two Class 5A games will be No. 4 Morgantown (19-7) against No. 1 John Marshall (24-3) at 5:45 p.m. and No. 3 Indian Creek (11-2) meeting No. 2 Wheeling Park (15-4).

On Field 4 in Class 3A, No. 1 Fort Frye (16-0) battles No. 4 River (12-7) at 5 p.m. and No. 2 Bellaire (15-2) meets No. 3 Shenandoah (8-7) at 6:45 p.m.

On Field 3 Wednesday, No. 1 Steubenville Catholic Central (13-3) goes against No. 4 Cameron (13-5) in Class 2A at 4 p.m.

The two Class 4A contests, all Buckeye 8 affairs, has No. 2 Harrison Central (10-4) taking on No. 3 St. Clairsville (8-7) at 5:45 p.m. and No. 1 Martins Ferry (12-4) playing No. 4 Buckeye Local (7-7) at 7:30 p.m.

On Field 4 in Class 1A, No. 1 St. John Central (14-1) meets No. 4 Paden City (7-16) and No. 3 Weirton Madonna (8-8) battles No. 2 Bishop Donahue (14-10) at 6:45 p.m.

The rain dates are Thursday and Friday.

The Saturday championship order is: 2A (10:30 a.m.), 3A (12:15 p.m.), 4A (2 p.m.), 5A (3:45 p.m.) and 1A (5:30 p.m.).

OVAC baseball

Wednesday is the cutoff date for Saturday's OVAC baseball semifinals at the higher seeds field.

The look of the standings shows some jockeying can be done throughout the next three days, depending on how many games each team plays.

The standings are:

Class 5A: Wheeling Park (16-2, 64.89), Edison (10-2, 61.5), Morgantown (11-5, 53.5) and Cambridge (9-4, 53.08). Parkersburg South (50.91) and Indian Creek (50.29) have shots of getting into the semifianls.

Class 4A: Harrison Central (12-2, 58.43), Steubenville (8-6, 38.57), Oak Glen (8-7, 32.8) and Martins Ferry (7-9, 31.14). Buckeye Local (31.14) is in the mix and Weir High (27.71) has an outside chance.

Class 3A: Magnolia (19-1, 57.6), Linsly (15-2, 54.12), Fort Frye (13-5, 39.78) and Shenandoah (7-3, 27.4). Buckeye Trail (32.57) and Bellaire (31.79) have outside chances.

Class 2A: Toronto (14-1, 55.07), Bridgeport (12-4, 39.75), Shadyside (8-4, 38.83) and Steubenville Catholic Central (8-4, 34.0). Nos. 2-4 may change order, but these four will stand.

Class 1A: Bishop Donahue (11-5, 39.25), Weirton Madonna (8-7, 27.07), Conotton Valley (7-7, 22.14) and Paden City (7-10, 14.24). St. John Central (13.64) is looking to overtake the Wildcats.

The baseball finals will be held May 3 and 4.
