Center looks at May schedule

NEW CUMBERLAND - Hancock County Senior Services warns seniors to be aware there are people fraudulently telling seniors they are eligible for the Lighthouse Program in order to obtain their personal information, including Social Security numbers.

Seniors are reminded West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services and Hancock County Senior Services employees have official photo identification which should be visible at all times. Seniors may ask to see that identification at any time. Seniors are cautioned not to give out personal or banking information or to allow anyone in their homes.

Bingo is held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Nentwick Care Center will sponsor a bingo extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 16 at the senior center. There will be free bingo, lunch, prizes and a nurse's station checking blood pressure and sugar levels.

Upcoming events include:

11 a.m., Singing Seniors, today, May 14, 21 and 28.

1 p.m., book club, today.

11 a.m., beginning line dancing class, Thursday, May 16, 23 and 30.

1 p.m., card-making classes, Thursday. The cost is $3 per person; all materials are included.

1 p.m., Wii Bowling tournament, Thursday and May 23.

9 a.m., Breakfast for Billiards, Monday.

11:30 a.m., crafting; 1 p.m., line dancing, Monday and May 20.

The senior center will hold couples' billiard games and ladies' billiard lessons at 1 p.m. every first and third Thursday of each month, beginning May 16. Those who are interested in attending are asked to call (304) 564-3801.

The Shutterbug Club met April 25, and the group will meet at 1 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month to review ideas and techniques for all skill levels.

The center will host a trip to Chicago Sept. 13-15. The trip will includes stops at Tommy Gun's Garage, Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile, Navy Pier and a cruise on the Chicago River. The cost is $400 per person for double occupancy. A deposit of one-third the cost is due June 1, a second deposit July 5 and the balance by Aug. 9. For information, call (304) 564-3801.

Upcoming day trips include a May 24 trip to the Rogers flea market and a June 13 trip to Wal-Mart. The number of bags that can come back with each person is limited because of bus size. To register, call the senior center.

The State Treasurer's Office regional marketing manager is available the first Tuesday of each month at the senior center to discuss government retirement, locating unclaimed property and SMART529 college savings. For information, visit www.wvsto.com.

Upcoming fitness programs include:

5 p.m. Mondays and 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Tai Chi. The balance, flexibility and strengthening class costs $3.

10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Everybody's Arthritis Fitness. The class is designed to relieve stiffness, decrease pain, improve balance, improve range of motion and strengthen. The cost is $3 and free to seniors and the disabled.

10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. Fridays, arthritis Tai Chi. The cost is $3 and free to seniors and the disabled.

5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Zumba. The cost is $5 and $3 for seniors.

Tae Bo, a fitness system incorporating martial arts, cardio and boxing, will begin at 6 p.m. May 22.

"Fitness Funds" can be earned by attending in exercise and health classes and wellness events. These funds can be used to purchase water bottles, lanyards and backpacks.

The daily soup and salad bar is available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the senior center. A $2 trip includes soup or salad, bread, dessert and beverage, and a $3 trip includes soup, salad, bread, dessert and beverage. An extra soup or salad is $1. Five meal trip tickets cost $12, and 10 meal trip tickets costs $24.
