Special library programs

continue in Wellsburg

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library welcomes young archaeologists for a "dinosaur dig" at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Participants will unearth "fossils" from a sandstone block.

And on Friday at 4 p.m. magician Dave Powers will perform for magic lovers of all ages.

Weir High seeking cheer coach

Weir High School is taking applications for the head cheerleading position and one assistant cheerleading position.

Keeder celebrating 99th

A celebration of the 99th birthday of Albert Keeder will be celebrated at Giovanni's Restaurant on Sunday.

He was born on July 15, 1914 in Toronto to James and Bertha (Dalrymple) Keeder. He lived most of his life in Weirton and was a short time employee of Weirton Steel Company. After a tour in World War II, he was employed as a carpenter for Gardner Lumber Co. and finished his career working as a carpenter for Carpenter Union 186. Retirement took him to sunny Florida, before he moved back to Weirton.

He was married to Mary Hickman (1934); then to Ethel Long Gardner (1968). From this marriage he was blessed with two step-daughters, Joyce Gardner Brady and Patricia Gardner Suici; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A sister, Shirley Bailey resides in Weirton.

His greatest joy was to make wooden crafts and took thousands of photos.

Weirton Farmers Market

on Mondays

The Weirton Farmers Market will continue at 3 p.m. Monday in the Goodwill parking lot, located at 306-308 Penco Road, Weirton, across from the Shop 'n Save plaza.

The market will be available each Monday through October.

Vendors provide locally grown and baked goods. Produce is picked fresh - often on Monday morning just before the market opens. All goods are produced within 50 miles of Weirton.

As an added bonus, many of the vendors accept senior and Women, Infants and Children vouchers.

The West Virginia University Extension Service sponsors the markets.

Art Beal at Country Friends

COLLIERS - Country Friends will host Art Beal and the Country Tradition band on Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 402 Old Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

Country Friends has events every Monday, Friday and Saturday at the hall. The doors open at 6 p.m. each Saturday, and the dance starts at 7 p.m.

On Monday and Friday nights, the doors open at 4 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m.

Participants can bring a covered dish if they desire for the meal that begins at 5 p.m.

Country Friends Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Christian friendship and brotherly love through music.

All proceeds go to charity.

Library to show fantasy film

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-rated animated film, "Escape from Planet Earth," at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The 3-D animated family features the voice of Brendan Fraser as astronaut Scorch Supernova, who becomes a hero to the blue alien population of the planet Baab.

Swimming lessons offered

WEIRTON - Baby and children's swimming lessons will be offered July 15-19 at Starvaggi Park in Weirton.

Baby swim, for ages 8 months to 3 years, will be 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Children's swim will be 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for beginners and 8 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. for Levels 204.

Registration will be held through Saturday at the Millsop Community Center, 3420 Main St., Weirton.
