FOLLANSBEE - The city of Follansbee will hold a memorial service and candlelight vigil Wednesday to mark the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the heroism it provoked.
In addition, a local business owner is organizing a walk to be held before the program.
The service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Follansbee Park.
First Judicial Circuit Court Judge James Mazzone will be the guest speaker for the service, which will be led by Mayor Emeritus Tony Paesano.
Paesano noted the city has observed the anniversary of 9-11 each year since it occurred.
He said it serves not only as a reminder of the tragedies of that day, but of the bravery and dedication of the emergency personnel and of local police, firefighters and other emergency personnel who also display such qualities.
During the service, the Tri-State Young Marines will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad will deliver a military salute.
Also expected to participate are local pastors Dan Cooper of Hooverson Heights Church of Christ and Joe Cuomo of the Christian Assembly of Follansbee; Mayor David Velegol Jr., and Brent Kimball, a recent Brooke High School graduate who will perform several patriotic songs.
Wreaths will be placed at the Veterans Memorial Fountain and the monument for Joey Perito, a local veteran who was killed by a land mine in Vietnam.
It will conclude with a candlelight vigil organized by Nina Meca. Small U.S. flags will be supplied by the 20th Century Woman's Club led by Carmel Esposito.
Local police, firefighters and ambulance personnel will be recognized for their service.
Eric Fithyan, owner of James Funeral Home, has planned a separate event to coincide with the service.
A Remember 9/11 Memorial Patriot Walk will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home at 1245 Main St. (state Route 2.)
The Tri-State Young Marines will lead participants from there to the Follansbee City Building and back north to Follansbee Park for the 9-11 memorial service.
The funeral home will provide refreshments at the end of the walk.
