Police, city workers in line for raises

WEIRTON - Police and public works employees could see a bump in their take-home pay in October.

At a special meeting Monday, City Council signed off on pay raises for members of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 84, as well as the Weirton Municipal Employees Union.

The vote was unanimous, though Ward 1 Councilman Ron Jones could not be at the meeting because the Legislature's interim meetings are in progress in Charleston.

Jones, however, voiced his "total support" of the pay raises in a message to council.

"If I were present, my vote would be a definite 'yes,'" he wrote. "These employees work hard for the residents of Weirton and are deserving of these increases."

City officials said they'd spent months at the bargaining table with both groups hammering out the terms of the three-year agreements, which involved significant concessions from employees in exchange for the higher pay.

Under the new schedule, probationary patrolmen will start at $16.53 an hour. Once they complete probation, they'd see a $1.03 per hour bump-up. Ranked officers also will see increases: Sergeants will get $18.98 per hour; lieutenants, $20.36 per hour; and captains, $22.08 per hour.

WEMU members, meanwhile, will see laborers paid $11.72 per hour; greasers, $12.19 per hour; loaders, $12.28 per hour; mechanic helpers and truck drivers, $12.28 per hour; body-man, $12.83 per hour; sanitation truck drivers and equipment operators, $13.02 per hour; heavy equipment operators, $13.33 per hour; mechanics, $13.72 per hour; body shop technician, $14.02; and crew leaders, $14.45 per hour.

There are no raises in play the final two years of the agreements.
