Boxing event coming

CHESTER — Justin “The Hawk” Steave will be looking for his 10th career victory Sunday when the Labor Dave Eve boxing show is held inside the Grand Ballroom at the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort.

The show will be hosted by Made Men Promotions and will feature several of the area’s most promising fighters.

Steave, a Weirton native, is scheduled to fight Rich Graham from Texas. Graham won his last fight with a knockout in the third round. Steave last fought in June, defeating James Robinson during a show in Pittsburgh.

Other bouts featuring local boxers include: Steubenville’s Broc Eakle vs. Mingo Junction’s Zack Odell for the Tri-State Middleweight Amateur title. Andrew Odell vs. Ethan Hayes for the Tri-State Light Heavyweight Amateur crown. Wellsville’s Davon Whitson vs. Bellaire’s Richie Lowe.

Paul “Red Dog” Eakle, the undisputed Tri-State Heavyweight champ, will meet Gabe Lambert, a two-time winner of the Parkersburg tough man title. Kiante Irving from Beaver Falls, a national Gold Gloves champ, will make his professional debut when he takes on Philadelphia’s Vince Berkhaulter.

Ellwood City’s unbeaten lightweight Rosalindo Morales will look to knock off Latorie Woodberry, from Virginia. Clarksburg heavyweight Daniel Martz will take on St Louis’s Richard Carmack and Danny Rosenberger of Youngstown is scheduled to meet Erik Plumeri of Buffalo. The other professional bout will feature Tre’Sean Wiggins of New Jersey against Pittsburgh’s Justin Johnson.

Doors will open Sunday at 5:30 p.m. with the first bell set for 7 p.m. The event welcomes fans of all ages, but attendees under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. For ticket information, visit www.mademenboxing.com

Indians top Twins 5-3

CLEVELAND — Jason Kipnis hit a three-run homer that broke a sixth-inning tie and sent the Cleveland Indians over the Minnesota Twins 5-3 on Thursday.

The AL Central-leading Indians opened a 14-game lead over second-place Minnesota. Cleveland is 31-11 against division opponents, and needed this win to beat the Twins 10-9 in the season series.

Mayfield sharp, Browns top Lions

DETROIT — Baker Mayfield threw for 138 yards in a dominant first half for Cleveland, and the Browns wrapped up the preseason with a 35-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.
