NEW MANCHESTER — Close football games in the fourth quarter often come down to who makes a play first.

Friday night, Harrison Central used several big fourth quarter plays to defeat Oak Glen, 28-17, on the road.

“I believe in our kids,” first-year Harrison Central coach Anthony Hayes said. “I know when times get tough our kids are going to pull through for us.

“I kept thinking the first defense to make a play (is going to win). Oak Glen is a good team. For us to come in here and give the performance that we did, I’m happy.”

After the teams traded back-and-forth leads multiple times, the Huskies (2-6) got back-to-back touchdown receptions by standout senior Tyler West sandwiched around a goal-line stand to pull away for the victory.

“That was huge,” Hayes said of the goal-line stop. “We were in position to get stops all night long, but we couldn’t close it out. To close it out on a goalline stand is huge. That right there is character and heart from our seniors.”

The Golden Bears (4-4) led 10-7 and 17-14 before 14 unanswered Harrison Central points.

“Our game plan was to keep the ball out of their hands,” Oak Glen coach Ted Arneault said. “Up until the end of the fourth quarter, we were able to do that. Harrison Central has a talented team, and they did a good job of moving the ball on us.

“We just didn’t get stops when we needed to. They made the plays that they needed to in the second half, and we didn’t.”

West finished with four catches for 96 yards and three scores, the last two coming in the fourth quarter. He also ran the ball twice for 20 yards. Sophomore Huskies quarterback Kobe Mitchell threw for 282 yards and four scores, completing 15 of 23 passes. Tucker Coultrap powered to 60 yards on 12 carries to help run down the clock in the fourth quarter.

Nick Chaney completed 16 of 29 passes for 186 and a touchdown for Oak Glen, throwing two interceptions (one on the Golden Bears’ last possession).

Gage Patterson ran for a 60-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it a 17-14 Oak Glen lead at the time, and finished with a total of 96 yards on 14 carries. Hunter Patterson hauled in six passes for 76 yards.

After Gage Patterson’s long run, Harrison Central answered with a 16-yard Mitchell to West strike to make it 21-17 Huskies.

The Golden Bears drove down to the Harrison Central 3-yard-line, but Chaney’s pass on fourth-and-goal was batted away.

The Huskies then went 97 yards to score for some insurance, Mitchell finding West — who just caught the ball off the finger tips of an Oak Glen defender — for a 38-yard score.

Mitchell also connected with West for a 20-yard score for a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, and delivered a 5-yard pass to Payton Taylor on fourth-and-goal for a 14-10 lead late in the third quarter.

Chaney’s touchdown toss was to senior tight end Ethan Travis from 10-yards out to tie the game at 7-7 in the second quarter. Dan Dwoskin booted a 27-yard field goal that gave the Golden Bears a 10-7 lead in the third quarter.

Harrison Central host Lutheran East next Friday, while Oak Glen travels to East Fairmont.
