Madonna opens season with win

PINE VALLEY — The Madonna boys basketball team opened the season by defeating Valley on the road Saturday, 90-52.

Leading the way for the Blue Dons was Brennon Secrist with a game-high 20 points. Lucky Pulice added 18 points. Gavin Dietrich finished with 15 points. Christian Ridgeway was also in double figures with 10 points.

Valley (1-2) were led by 11 points from Gage Satterfield. The Lumberjacks got 10 points each from Levi Anderson and Tommy Shannon.

The Blue Dons are 1-0 and play at home on Tuesday against Clay-Battelle.

Indian Creek bests Martins Ferry

MARTINS FERRY — The Indian Creek girls basketball team’s strong defensive effort was on display again Saturday during its 59-32 victory over Martins Ferry.

All but one Redskin who played scored. Kylie Kiger led with 11 points. Makenzie Taylor and Mackenzie Orban recorded nine points apiece. Tera Parrish added seven.

Big Red Boosters meet Monday

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red Boosters are meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday in the Harding Stadium Fieldhouse.

Hartline becomes receivers coach

COLUMBUS — Brian Hartline has been promoted to permanent receivers coach at Ohio State.

Hartline, a former Buckeyes player and NFL veteran, was made interim coach when Zach Smith was fired in July because of domestic abuse allegations.

Under Hartline, Ohio State receivers achieved school records in receptions, yards and touchdowns behind quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr.

Led by three fifth-year senior co-captains, Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin, and including fourth-year junior K.J. Hill, Ohio State receivers caught 291 passes for 4,211 yards and 43 touchdowns.

Hartline started as a quality control coach for Ohio State in 2017.

No. 6 Ohio State plays No. 9 Washington in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

Anthony York dies at age 35

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Anthony York, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers chief executive office Jed York, has died. He was 35.

The 49ers said Anthony York died Friday. The team didn’t release a cause of death.

York was one of four children of 49ers owners John York and Denise DeBartolo York. York was an entrepreneur who founded a company named Koda, which helps prepare young people for their first jobs upon graduating college. York also did philanthropy work for the 49ers Foundation and worked closely with incarcerated youth.

York also is survived by twin sisters Jenna and Mara. He was born in Youngstown on Aug. 3, 1983.

United captures MLS Cup

ATLANTA — Josef Martinez and Franco Escobar scored goals, Brad Guzan came up with a couple of clutch saves and Atlanta United gave the city its first title since 1995 with a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup final Saturday night.
