WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek boys basketball team opened up a big early lead and never trailed, holding off Weir High late for a 66-60 win Friday night.

“Anytime Indian Creek and Weir play, it’s always a close game,” Indian Creek coach Joe Dunlevy said. “Give credit to (Weir High) coach (Mike Granato), their kids never gave up. They kept battling. We knew they would. I give our kids credit, too. I thought, for the most part, we played pretty well.”

The Redskins improve to 3-0, while the Red Riders fall to 0-2.

“We have a veteran team,” Dunlevy said. “For our kids, as well as Weir’s kids, it takes a while to get the legs back after football season. (Weir) had a hell of a football season. They come right out of it and it’s tough. We have some guys in the same boat coming off of (football) injuries.”

Indian Creek scored the game’s first 11 points, opening up a 15-4 lead after the opening quarter. Nine of those 15 came from Michael Allan.

Weir High did not get on the board until there was 2:09 remaining in the first quarter, but got the offense going in the second eight minutes.

The Red Riders got nine points from Luka Haught in the second, including a long 3-pointer, twice narrowing the Redskins lead to five.

Indian Creek led by six, 29-23, at the break. Weir High out-scored Indian Creek 19-14 in the second.

The Red Riders pulled within four with 22 seconds to go, but Indian Creek added a pair of free throws to win, 66-60.

Brennon Norris had all of his 12 points in the second half.

Allan led the way with a game-high 25 points.

“Michael is a kid that works very hard,” Dunlevy said. “A lot of people probably didn’t know who he was at the beginning of the year, but he has improved his game immensely and become a leader for us.”

Weir High got 19 points from Tanner Mikula, who finished with five from beyond the arc.

Both teams had several players in foul trouble throughout most of the game.

GAME NOTES

Indian Creek won the jayvee contest, 46-43. A Weir High buzzer-beater try narrowly missed extending the game to overtime. The Redskins were led by Isaiah Vandine with 13 points. Isaac Reitter had 12 for the Red Riders.

In the first game of what was a triple-header, the Indian Creek freshman team won 60-56 in double overtime. Santana Smith had 25 for the Redskins, while Charlie Zagula led the Red Riders with 13.
