Edison falls at home to East Liverpool

RICHMOND — Two bad quarters proved to be too much for the Edison boys basketball team to overcome against East Liverpool.

The Wildcats dug themselves an early hole, and the hole got even deeper in the fourth, as the Potters built a commanding lead en route to a 63-44 victory in a Buckeye 8 North Division matchup Friday night.

“We came out flat,” Edison (3-7) head coach Nate Moses said. “That is something you can put on me. We came in with a good game plan. We just didn’t execute.”

East Liverpool led by 10 points at the end of the first quarter and by 12 at halftime. Thanks to a big run to end the third and start the fourth, the visitors built a 34-point advantage in the fourth.

“We played pretty sharp tonight,” East Liverpool (7-3) head coach Nate Conley said. “We were up by 34 points in the fourth, and then we got a little sloppy, and they were able to cut into the lead. That is what they do. They are a good 3-point shooting team. We wanted to take them out of their offense, and we were able to do that. I am happy with how we played.”

Isaac Schmitz scored a team-high 22 points to lead Edison (17 scored in the fourth).

“We are good in transition,” Conley said. “Tonight, we didn’t play fast. Our focus was on defense. We wanted to take No. 11 (Schmitz) out of the game, and he had five points through three quarters. We know he can shoot. He’s a good ballplayer.”

Gabe Roach recorded a game-high 24 points to lead the way for the Potters, while Tyler Roe tallied 10.

East Liverpool led 14-4 at the end of the first and added to its lead in the second. The Wildcats fought back and pulled to within 32-20 at halftime.

“That is typical,” Moses said of his team’s ability to get back into the game. “We play well at times. We do what we are capable of doing. We just don’t do it consistently. We just are not a consistent basketball team.”

A strong end to the third enabled East Liverpool to build a 48-25 lead heading into the fourth. A strong start to the fourth allowed the Potters to take a 61-27 lead before Edison ended the game on a 17-2 spurt.

“If you look, we scored four points in the first quarter, and we scored five in the third,” Moses said. “You aren’t going to win when you do that. I don’t know how many turnovers we had, but you are not going to win when you have turnovers and do not shoot the ball well against a good, athletic team like East Liverpool.”

The next game for both teams is on the road. East Liverpool is scheduled to play tonight against Madonna inside the Dube Dome.

“I don’t know much about Madonna,” Conley said. “We got some film on them. We are going to watch tonight (Friday). It is going to be a long night. We are going to have a shoot around (today).”

Edison is slated to play Tuesday night down at Buckeye 8 North Division and Jefferson County rival Buckeye Local.

“I sure hope so,” Moses said about his team forgetting the loss to the Potters and coming out ready to play the Panthers. “Buckeye Local is an improved team. Buckeye Local is a hard place to play no matter what their record is. We are going to have to regroup. We are going to have to come together and regroup and get ready to play Buckeye Local.”
