Sinicropi, Schmitz lead Edison to big win over Buckeye Local

CONNORVILLE — Isaac Schmitz and Anthony Sinicropi combined for 39 points, and Edison’s pressure defense played a part in 26 Buckeye Local turnovers, as the Wildcats snapped a three-game skid with a 75-42 win over the Panthers Tuesday night.

Coach Nate Moses’ Wildcats dropped consecutive decisions to Weir High, Toronto and East Liverpool before Tuesday’s win over Buckeye. Earlier winners this season over the Panthers, Edison improved to 4-6 and hosts Indian Creek on Friday.

On the other side of the floor, coach Chris Heaton’s young Panthers suffered their fifth-straight setback since their lone win over Bellaire. They fell to 1-10 on the campaign and will be back in action on Friday on the road to face Beaver Local.

“One thing about these kids, they are playing hard. They are getting after it on the defensive end, and they are pushing it on the offensive end,” Moses said. “They keep working hard like they are, then good things will start to happen.

“We came out with a big win tonight. A much-needed win, we’ve gone through a tough stall over the past few weeks, so it is nice to come down here and get a win. We just need to keep playing hard and putting pressure on the defensive end.”

Edison came out with a 7-0 lead to open the game, getting buckets from Zac Easter and Alec McBane and more from the stripe by Sinicropi and Schmitz. The Wildcats found themselves holding off the scrappy Panthers through the rest of the frame, as the Darrah twins (Hunter and Luke) combined for all 10 of Buckeye’s points. That enable the mistake-prone Panthers to close the first, facing a 15-10 deficit.

After forcing 11 first-quarter Buckeye turnovers, the Wildcats continued the pressure that resulted in seven more in the second. The opportunities enabled Edison to outscore the hosts, 21-7, to grab a 36-17 lead at the half. Sinicropi tossed in nine during the frame, and Schmitz added seven to dominate Buckeye.

“The goal was to pressure the ball and put a lot of pressure on them. When you do that, it usually creates a lot of turnovers,” Moses said. “We think we are a deep team, and we are getting deeper and able to get kids in and out, and that will pay off down the road.”

In the third frame, the Wildcats limited Buckeye to just three buckets and followed the hot scoring of Schmitz, who tossed in 10 during the period. After three, the Wildcats doubled Buckeye’s score at 54-27.

“The same old song and dance,” Heaton said. “Our young, experienced team playing another experienced, veteran team, you can tell the difference. They shot very well. They dropped down open 3s. That’s one thing we stress is that they have to concentrate on their shooters, get a hand in their face and, hopefully, that will deter them and make them miss some shots.

“A lot of it was their pressure, but a lot was the unforced errors. I don’t know if they are still nervous out there. We just need to work on some of the small things and, hopefully, that will give us a few more opportunities to take shots.”

Schmitz led the Edison scorers with 23 points that included all but two from the floor. Sinicropi tossed in 16, and Easter closed with 11. Schmitz also led the winners with six rebounds.

Luke Darrah was the lone double figure scorer for Buckeye with 10 points, while Cameron Grabits and Mason Brown had six each. Grabits closed with eight rebounds.
