Harrison Central boys win Division II bowling sectional

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — A year ago, Harrison Central head coach Bobbie Jo Parkinson sweated out the final results at the Ohio Division II East District boys sectional bowling tournament, not knowing if her Huskies would make the district field.

There was no drama Saturday inside St. Clair Lanes.

Bolstered by three top 10 finishers, Harrison Central rolled to its first sectional championship, defeating runner-up East Liverpool by 322 pins.

“The boys were hungry for this,” said Parkinson, whose team was fourth last year. “They got a taste of it last year and from the beginning of the season they wanted to be the sectional champs and they got the job done. I’m very, very proud.”

Union Local claimed the third, and final, team berth in Friday’s district tournament at Sunrise Strikes in Zanesville. The Jets bested Bridgeport by 14 pins — 3,638-3,624 — to punch their ticket.

Bridgeport’s Gavan Graham claimed his third straight sectional crown en route to earning another district berth. He’ll be joined in Muskingum County by St. Clairsville’s Joey Patrizi.

As for the Huskies, they, again, were successful behind a group that’s been consistent up and down the lineup all season.

Sophomore Zachary Keyser paced the unit Saturday, finishing fourth overall with a 620. Logan Cologie was eighth with a 596, while Hunter Stark was a spot back with a 592. Trevor Thompson finished 18th with a 550, while Jacob Hudson — the Buckeye 8 champ — was 19th with a 542.

“It’s the best feeling I’ve had,” Parkinson said. “This team is very strong from the No. 1 bowler all the way down to my No. 8. And my three substitutes, I can put them in and count on them at any time.

“I tell the kids all the time it takes five and the other kids to to do what we’ve done. We have a have a versatile team and I’m beyond proud of those kids. I’m thrilled.”

Union Local used the same approach in advancing. The Jets had two bowlers in the top 10, then used depth to rack up pins.

Austin Taylor paced UL, finishing third with a 625. Alberto Dunlap, who placed third at state last year, rolled a three-game total of 579, and was 10th.

Teams also rolled six Baker games.

Austin Graham (20th, 541), Jordan Duke (33rd, 482) and Bryan Neidert (37th, 417) also scored for the Jets.

“It was a team win,” Union Local head coach Doug Stephens said. “Everyone did their part. I can’t say enough about the great group of kids I have.

“They knew it was going to be close and it came down to the end and they were able to pull it out.”

Barnesville was fifth in the team standings, followed by Beaver Local, Monroe Central, Carrollton, St. Clairsville and Buckeye Local.

Graham’s winning total of 639 wasn’t enough to get the Bulldogs past the Jets, but the junior is now 3-for-3 in sectional tournaments.

“I’m just happy to be able to move on,” he said. “My teammates and coaches really pushed me do do better. All of the credit goes to them.”

East Liverpool’s Logan Simms was second overall. Carrollton’s Brycen Carter was fifth and earned the other individual qualifying berth.

Patrizi was sixth with a 611.

“It feels great,” said the junior, advancing to district as an individual for the first time. “I really wanted this. Last year, I was able to go with this team and this year that didn’t happen. I’m really happy.”

Patrizi said luck played a part in his performance, along with an ability to bounce back when things got rough.

“Staying consistent and trying to keep my head up and not being to upset with what I’m doing,” he added.

Monroe Central’s Kaden Tomlin was seventh, with a score of 608, while Barnesville’s Logan Eddy was 11th (573).
