Huskies’ Mitchell, Red Knights’ Karaffa earn top honors for Eastern District bball awards

Harrison Central’s Kobe Mitchell and Toronto’s Nate Karaffa earned top honors for the Eastern District Basketball All-Star awards.

Mitchell, a sophomore, was named the boys Division II Player of the Year. Karaffa, a senior and three-sport star, is the boys Division IV Co-Player of the Year.

Mitchell averaged 25.5 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game in the regular season and is also a first-teamer. Also making the Division II first team is Steubenville senior Jordan Zimmerman, who averaged 15.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.7 steals per contest. He also is shooting 53 percent from the field.

Earning second-team honors are Steubenville senior James Roundtree and Indian Creek senior Michael Allan. Roundtree averaged 13.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per outing, while shooting 59 percent from the field. Allan averaged 15.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and two assists per game. He shot 57 percent from the field and 73.7 from the charity stripe.

On the Division II third team is Harrison Central senior Evan Stine. He averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per contest.

Special mention athletes are Steubenville’s Jorian Jones, Calvin Bickerstaff and Ryan Rauch, as well as Indian Creek’s Austin Judson and Derrick Eakle, and Harrison Central’s Gavin Muckle. Honorable mention are Harrison Central’s Caden Dalton and Steubenville’s Jordan Wallace.

For the Division III boys, Edison senior Isaac Schmitz earned first-team honors. He averaged 16 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Edison junior Alec McBane made the third team, averaging 10 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Special mention was Edison’s Zac Easter, while Buckeye Local’s Hunter Darrah is an honorable mention.

Karaffa, along with being Co-Player of the Year, is a Division IV first-teamer. He averaged 19.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, four assists and 4.7 steals per contest. Earning second-team honors is Toronto senior Trillion West, who averaged 14.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.1 steals per outing.

On the third team are Toronto junior Lucas Gulczynski and Catholic Central’s Luca Connor. Gulczynski averaged 10.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Connor averaged 9.6 points and 1.2 assists per game.

Division IV special mentions are Toronto’s Nick Sninchak and Catholic Central’s Dom Argentine. Honorable mentions are Catholic Central’s Ryan Gorman and Vince Carapellotti. Also, Toronto head coach Sean Tucker was a Coach of the Year finalist.

GIRLS

Steubenville sophomore Makayla Abram was a finalist for the Division II Player of the Year and is a first-teamer, along with Indian Creek sophomore Taylor Jones. Abram averaged 16.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. Jones averaged 10.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per contest.

Earning second-team honors are Big Red junior Madison Fields and Indian Creek sophomore Kylie Kiger. Fields averaged 13.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Kiger averaged 12.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.1 assists per contest.

Special mentions are Indian Creek’s Mackenzie Taylor and Mackenzie Orban. Steubenville’s Leah Ferguson is an honorable mention. Indian Creek head coach Steve Eft was a Coach of the Year finalist.

Buckeye Local 2,000-point scorer Emily Holzopfel is a Division III first-teamer, averaging 24 points per game in the process.

Earning second-team honors is Harrison Central senior Sydney Starr. She averaged 13 points, 11 rebounds and two steals per game.

Harrison Central’s Lexee McAfee and MaKayla Dunkle are special mentions. Edison’s Lauren Ferralli and Kenzi Potkrajac, along with Buckeye Local’s Alaire Destifanes, are honorable mentions.

In Division IV, Catholic Central senior Julia Zatta made the first team. She averaged 18.4 points, four rebounds, two assists and 2.3 steals per game.

Earning second-team honors are Catholic Central senior Christine Dombrowski and Toronto sophomore Kendal Thomas. Dombrowski averaged 16.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 4.8 steals per game. Thomas averaged 12 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals per outing.

On the third team are Catholic Central junior Bella Oliver and Toronto senior Jo’Zaeyah Jordan. Oliver averaged 11.9 points, 11.4 rebounds, two steals and two assists per game. Jordan averaged 10.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 2.1 steals per contest.

Toronto’s Maddie Anderson is a special mention, while Bianca McDonald and Riley Kinsey are honorable mentions.
