NEW MANCHESTER — Oak Glen rode a balanced offensive attack to the best start in school history Friday night, improving to 4-0 for the first time with a 41-14 victory over Perry Traditional Academy out of Pittsburgh.

“I’m proud of the kids,” Oak Glen head coach Ted Arneault said. “They’ve done everything they’ve needed to do to get this far. We’re not satisfied. We’re ready for more.”

The Golden Bears compiled 494 yards of total offense, 280 of which came on the ground.

“They ran the ball,” Perry head coach Rod Rutherford said. “It was simple. They didn’t do anything but push us around and run downhill. That is smash-mouth football, and you have to appreciate that.”

Paxton Shuman ran for 79 yards and three scores on 14 carries, while Hunter Patterson ran for 103 yards and touchdown on nine carries. Patterson also caught a 79-yard touchdown and finished with 81 receiving yards.

“Kudos to our offensive line,” Arneault said. “They really opened up the holes. They’ve pushed and worked hard in the weight room.”

Nick Chaney completed 13 of 21 passes for 216 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Oak Glen went nine plays on the opening drive, capped by a Shuman touchdown run of 11 yards.

After a Micheal Lemley interception, the Golden Bears again went nine plays, this time Patterson running it in from the 10 for a 14-0 lead.

After Perry (2-3) made it 14-6, Shuman capped another long scoring drive to make it 21-6.

After the defense forced a punt, Chaney hit Patterson for a 79-yard catch and run to make it 28-6.

Perry fumbled the snap on a late second-quarter punt to set Oak Glen up at the 9. On fourth and goal, Chaney found Zach Taylor for a 35-6 halftime lead.

Shuman made it 41-6 with a 5-yard run in the third quarter.

Perry added a touchdown late in the third. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
