CCHS girls open with huge win

STEUBENVILLE — Two players recorded double-doubles Saturday, as Catholic Central opened its girls basketball season with a 54-15 victory over Southern Local inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium.

Senior Isabella Oliver knocked down 16 points and collared 19 rebounds for the Crusaders. Meanwhile, Edy Harold, also a senior, netted 10 points and was charted with 11 steals.

Central, thanks to six points from Oliver and five from Carly Fayak, jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the opening quarter. The Crusaders led 28-3 at the intermission.

“You’re always happy to open a season with a victory,” said Jess Looman, who’s in her sixth year as Central’s coach. “I thought we came out with some good intensity on the defensive end.

“We struggled a little offensively early but, once we settled in, I thought we moved the basketball pretty well. We had some typical first game jitters but, all in all, it’s great to start 1-0.”

Makayla Crow and Ronni Mayfield each scored six each for Michael Skrinjar’s Indians, who dropped to 0-2. Crow’s points came via connections from behind the arc.

Katie Zatta added seven for Central, while Morgan Green and Fayak tallied five apiece.

“Give Southern Local credit,” Looman said. “I know coach Skrinjar has a young team but his girls played hard from the opening tip. They never quit hustling.”

Central, behind 10 points from Maria Meyer, posted a 45-9 victory in the junior varsity contest. Ellen Rhode and Grace Balzano evenly divided 16 points, while Tina Dong added seven. Jessica Lafferty paced Southern with four.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL: Return to action Monday with a road game at Beallsville. It then will participate in the Brooke Girls Basketball Tipoff Tournament Thursday and Friday.

“We have a challenging week ahead of us,” Looman said. “Beallsville will be a strong test for us. They have a couple of really good players. We’ll need to play much better than we did today.”
