River 51, Catholic Central 45

STEUBENVILLE — River scored the game’s initial 12 points, then held on from there to earn a surprising 51-45 girls basketball victory over Catholic Central Saturday inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium.

Allie Long powered the River hot start, as she tallied eight of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter. Kiley Piatt added four for the Pilots, who posted just their fifth win in 19 outings.

The Crusaders, thanks to a pair of Katie Zatta triples, fought back and trailed 15-10 after the initial eight minutes. Both teams scored 12 in the second and River was up 27-22 at the intermission.

Central (11-6) rallied to take a 36-33 lead in the third. Zatta and Morgan Green both swished a pair from behind the arc. River, however, closed the quarter with an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 41-36.

Thanks to a Carly Fayak 3-pointer, the Crusaders went up again late in the fourth (43-42). The Pilots, however, rallied down the stretch to put the triumph on ice. During the final quarter, River drained eight of 10 free throw attempts.

Long finished with nine field goals and was a perfect 4 for 4 from the line. Piatt joined her in double figures, netting 14. She knocked 5 of 6 free throw tries.

Zatta paced Central with 14. Green, Fayak and Hannah Olszewski all scored eight for the Crusaders.
