Steubenville girls claim sectional title over Philo

DUNCAN FALLS — The Steubenville girls basketball team overcame a slow start, shot it well from the foul line and eliminated Philo from the Divison II tournament, 52-38, on Saturday.

Big Red (9-14), the 11th seed, advances to the district semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday against second-seeded Indian Creek, who defeated Meadowbrook on Saturday.

Makayla Abram paced Steubenville with a game-high 18 points. In fact, she was the only player from both teams combined to score in double digits. Maggi Cucarese and Kylie Maxwell evenly divided 18.

Big Red only scored four points in the opening quarter but trailed just 7-4. It led, 19-17, at halftime, then 34-30 heading into the fourth. There, it outscored Philo, 18-8.
