Indian Creek’s run ends with loss to New Philly in district semi

MINERVA — Indian Creek’s surprise run to the Division II East 1 District Tournament came to an end in the semifinals on Monday.

The Redskins, who had a youthful lineup that found its way as the season went along and captured a sectional title with an upset of OVAC champion Cambridge last week, took an early lead but could not hang on against No 4 seed New Philadelphia as the Quakers came back with for an 8-4 victory.

The Redskins, the No. 12 seed in the tournament, drop the curtain above .500 at 14-12.

Creek opened a 1-0 lead in the first with a Landon Pownall RBI, then made it 2-0 in the second, a Jayden Vnndeborne double providing the big hit in the inning.

In the third, however, is when New Philadelphia got its bats going, plating six runs to jump ahead, ultimately for good.

The Redksins got back within three with a run in the top of the fourth, before the Quakers added another in the fifth and sixth innings to lead 8-3 going to the seventh.

Creek didn’t go away quietly as Caleb Bodo, Jack Amis and Cam Franke each singled and the Redskins added a run to get within four, but that would be as close as it would get as the Quakers hung on and advanced.

Four Indian Creek errors proved costly as just three of Quakers’ eight runs were earned.

Ty Householder started and tossed the first 2 2/3 innings for Creek, striking out three.

Sy Howell went the final 3 1/3 innings, striking out two.

Vandeborne finished with a double while having a two-hit game for Mike Cottis’ Redskins.

New Philadelphia will take on No. 13 seed West Holmes in Wednesday’s district championship game.

West Holmes topped No. 10 seed John Glenn, 3-1, on Monday in the other semifinal.
