Madonna boys slay the Dragons for big win at home

WEIRTON — The Madonna boys basketball team fended off visiting Cameron in a key matchup of OVAC and WVSSAC Class A foes on Tuesday night inside the Dube Dome, 53-50.

The Blue Dons opened a 17-15 lead after one, opened the lead to 32-25 at halftime and held a 43-36 advantage going to the fourth quarter, which proved to be enough to slay the Dragons in a meeting of the top two in the OVAC Class A standings and a potential preview of conference and sectional tournament meetings to come.

The Blue Dons have now won both regular season meetings, also winning at Cameron on Jan. 10.

Anthony Mascio had another strong night for Madonna, now 9-8, by tallying 21 points.

Luca Muzzi netted 12 points and Luke Amaismeier tallied 11 for veteran coach George Vargo’s club.

Cole Burkett led the Dragons (9-7) with a game-high 23 points, while Colson Wichterman netted 13 points and Lance Hartley tallied 10 to give both teams three players in double digits.

The Dons travel to Tyler Consolidted on Saturday.

Edison tops Jefferson Christian

RICHMOND — The Edison boys basketball team defeated Jefferson County Christian at home on Tuesday to celebrate its senior night, 72-37.

The hosts opened a 20-4 lead after the first quarter and did not look back.

The Wildcats were led by their seniors as all of them found the scoresheet.

Gage Cline netted 11 points, while Luke Taylor, Brayden Moses and Hunter Rothacker each netted 10 points.

Edison takes on Catholic Central on Friday night.

Huskies top Potters

EAST LIVERPOOL — Harrison Central bolstered its OVAC positioning with a 71-57 win on the road at East Liverpool in a key Class 4A battle on Tuesday night.

Mykel Quito led the Huskies (10-7) with 26 points, while Hayden Cassidy netted 21 and Jace Madzia seven.

Coach Aaron Foldi’s Huskies started fast, opening a 21-10 lead after one and led by 11 at halftime.

Harrison Central travels to St. Clairsville on Friday night.

Panthers tame the Bulldogs

CONNORVILLE — Buckeye Local opened a big, early lead over Bridgeport on Tuesday night and went on to win convincingly, 76-43.

Ryan Deitch led the Panthers, now 6-13, with a game-high 24 points, while Gavyn Romanyak netted 14 points and Ryder Kindberg-Colabelli finished with 12.

The Panthers are off until OVAC consolation pool play next week.
