Madonna’s return to the playoffs ends at Wahama

MASON — Madonna’s successful season came to a close Saturday.

The Blue Dons, making their first playoff appearance since 2020, bowed out of the Class A postseason with a 68-13 loss on the road at Wahama on Saturday, the No. 3 team in the state.

Madonna was the No. 14 seed and drops the curtain at 7-4.

The White Falcons, now 11-0, advance to take on No. 6 seed Sherman in the second round.

“I’m really proud of what this group accomplished,” Madonna head coach John McCune, who guided the Dons to the playoffs in his first season, said. “Not many teams with less than 20 players on the roster get a chance to compete in the playoffs.”

Wahama, which has scored 60-plus points in three-straight games, used a long, methodical drive on which it converted a fourth down, to take the lead with a Wyatt Harris touchdown and never looked back.

The Blue Dons turned the ball over five times in the opening half, including on their first drive, and Harris scored on the very next play to quickly put the home team up a pair of scores.

The Dons had a promising drive on the ensuing possession again end in a fumble, and again it took Wahama just one play to make them pay for the mistake as standout Connor Lambert raced 60 yards to make it 20-0.

Trace Simpkins scored just before the end of the quarter to make it 27-0 after one.

Simpkins ran for two more scores that were set up by the Falcons recovering fumbles, making it 40-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter.

Madonna slowed the scoring frenzy with a nice drive but turned the ball over on downs at the Wahama 19, and Simpkins ran for another long score three plays later.

The Dons did get on the board on the next possession as Maddox Bowen connected with KJ Ward for an 88-yard catch and run.

Lambert, who entered the game nearing 2,000 yards on the season, ran for another score on the next Wahama drive and, after an interception, scored for a third time to make it a 61-6 Falcons lead at the half.

Each team scored once in the second half, Madonna’s TD coming on a Bowen to Andre Crossland connection in the fourth quarter to provide the final margin.

Bowen did throw for more than 250 yards in the game to conclude what was a strong debut campaign for the freshman signal caller.

The playoff trip was the end of the line for Madonna’s seven seniors — Crossland, Ward, Wes Molish, Koleton Grishkevich, Dominic Maple, Logan Brown and Trent McCartney.

“I’m grateful for them trusting this coaching staff after having three coaches in three years,” McCune said of his seniors. “They gave it their all and have set a standard moving forward for the younger guys.

“What a fun group to be around, we had a lot of fun. The short time we spent together will hopefully make a positive impact on their lives.”
