Carrollton rallies for win over Indian Creek
WINTERSVILLE — The roller coaster ride continues for the Indian Creek girls basketball team.
Indian Creek led by six points in the first quarter only to see Carrollton rally and take an 11-point advantage in the third. The Redskins responded and closed to within one and they had a chance to take the lead, but they were unable to convert. The Warriors recorded the next four points en route to a 47-42 victory Monday night on Coach D Court.
“We hit a lull in the second quarter,” Indian Creek (8-7) head coach Steve Eft said. “Against good teams like that, you can’t have a four-point quarter. That will kill you. That came back to get us. We are still young in some areas. We have to get better in some areas. It was a tough loss, but it was a step in the right direction.”
The hosts took a 10-4 lead with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter, however, the visitors ripped off a 24-8 run to build a 28-18 advantage in the third. The Red-and-Gold battled back and pulled to within 39-38. Indian Creek had a chance to retake the lead, however, they could not convert from in close, and the girls in black scored the next four points to regain the momentum.
“We missed a few layups,” Eft said. “Offensively in the second half, we were getting good looks. We had some passes off the mark, and we missed some shots inside. Our effort was better. You to hate to lose. If you lose, you learn from it, and we will use this as a learning experience. I told the girls to let her tonight, and then when we get back in the gym tomorrow our focus will be 100 percent on Union Local.”
McKenna Scott collected a team-high 17 points to lead the way offensively for Indian Creek, while Kaydence Walker and Riley Sadler each tallied eight.
Kylie Ujcich contributed a game-high 20 points to lead the way for Carrollton (12-3), while Braelynn Roudebush and Ivy Bishop each produced eight.
A 3-point play by Scott gave the girls from Jefferson County a 10-4 advantage in the first, but the girls in black scored the final eight points of the quarter to take a 12-10 lead into the second.
Creek scored the first two points of the second, however, the visitors from Carroll County outscored them 10-4 in the quarter to take a 22-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The victors increased their advantage to 10 points in the third, however, Scott drained a 3-pointer from the corner to keep the Redskins within striking distance. Carrollton continued to battle, and the Warriors increased their advantage to 37-26. Carrollton led 39-31 entering the fourth.
Indian Creek answered the call as they closed to within 39-33, but a couple empty trips kept Carrollton in control. Undeterred, the Redskins closed to within one, however, they were unable to ever get over the hump.
“They played zone a little bit more than we thought they would,” Eft said about the Warriors. “They switched defenses in the first half. They switched from man to a 3-2 zone. They did what we thought they would. They just made a couple more plays than we did.”
The Redskins started the season at 5-1 before losing five straight games to drop to 5-6. Indian Creek responded to win its next three games before coming up short against Carrollton.
Carrollton is scheduled to play Salem Wednesday on the road.
Indian Creek is slated to play Union Local at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Buckeye 8 Championships down at the ECO Center.
