Indian Creek uses defense to get a win over Weir

WINTERSVILLE — Indian Creek’s defense made the difference against Weir.

The Indian Creek boys’ basketball team limited Weir to single digits in all four quarters while the Redskins reached double digits in each of the first three quarters en route to a 40-23 victory against the Red Riders Wednesday night on Coach D Court.

“We just keep working and trying to get better,” Indian Creek (5-10) head coach Joe Dunlevy said. “It is a long year. We are starting to be in games, and we are competing in every game. Like I said the other day, tonight, we did a good job of running our offense. We shared the ball. I don’t know how many assists we had, but I think we had a lot.”

The Red Riders struggled on the offensive end throughout the night.

“I really don’t know what to say,” Weir (3-9) head coach Anthony Santangelo said. “We just talked as coaches, and we don’t have a guy who wants to score the ball. We don’t have a guy who wants the ball. We started the season all right, but not we are not sure as coaches.”

The Red-and-Gold doubled up the visitors from Hancock County, 10-5, in each of the first two quarter as Indian Creek took a 20-10 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Redskins led by as many as 11 points in the quarter.

“Joe is a good coach,” Santangelo said. “Their guys listen to the coaching. They put in the work. They grind it out. We are trying to teach our guys. Respect to them. They beat us tonight. We will learn tomorrow and try and get ready to play Oak Glen.”

The victors outscored the Red Riders, 11-6, in the third to build a 31-16 lead entering the fourth. Indian Creek outscored Weir, 9-7, in the fourth to account for the final score.

“Everybody goes through it,” Dunlevy said about Weir playing some younger kids. “They are playing some young kids. It is tough. We have been there. We have seniors. We want to keep getting better every game and at every practice. Our kids are working hard.”

Two players produced double digits in points for Indian Creek. Individually, Nickey Eddy delivered a game-high 13 points, Caleb Bodo tallied 10 and Mason Lester scored eight.

“Every team does a better job when they run their offense,” Dunlevy said. “We did that tonight.”

Damir Mowder and Anthony Jeffers each finished with eight points to lead the way for Weir.

Weir is scheduled to play Hancock County rival Oak Glen Friday night at home inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.

Indian Creek is slated to Bellaire in the Buckeye 8 Championships at noon Saturday down at the ECO Center.
