Local swimmers advance to regionals from Big Red sectional meet

STEUBENVILLE — Catholic Central’s Santiago Descalzo stood alone at the top of the podium Saturday at the Ohio Division II Eastern District Sectional Swim Meet at the Steubenville High School Natatorium.

Descalzo finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.59. Descalzo was the lone local to win a sectional title. Descalzo’s time is the 13th fastest going into the district meet.

Only the top finisher in the individual events and the relay races were guaranteed to qualify for the upcoming district meet. There will also be 29 at-large qualifiers for the individual events and 21 at-large qualifiers for the relay races with the spots being determined by the times posted at the Central, East and Southeast District Sectional meets.

The qualifiers for the district meet were announced Sunday afternoon.

Descalzo is also qualified in the 100 butterfly with 12th fastest time of 1:00.09.

Also for the Crusaders, Javier Descalzo qualified in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Javier Descalzo qualified in the 50 freestyle with the 24th fastest time of :24.49 and with the 20th fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.14).

Indian Creek Hunter Rusnak qualified for the district meet in two individual events – the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Rusnak recorded the 13th fastest time in the 50 freestyle with a time of :23.95, and he had 11th fastest time in the 100 freestyle (:53.37)

Rusnak’s teammate – Caleb Zifzal – is an alternate in the 50 freestyle (:25.31).

Edison’s Michal Larkins qualified in the 100 breastroke with the 16th fastest time (1:10.07).

Edison’s 200 freestyle relay team of Issac Pudder, Wyatt Bernhart, Luke Linscott and Larkins qualified for the district meet with the 19th fastest time (1:44.72). Indian Creek’s team of Zifzal, Brody Kruner, Elijah Bright and Rusnak qualified with the 21st fastest time (1:37.69) and Big Red’s team of William Norris, Kyler Snyder, Cooper Kirkpatrick and Chandler Hoffman) qualified with the 24th fastest time (1:49.97).

Indian Creek’s 400 freestyle relay team of Zifzal, Hunter Allen, Bright and Rusnak qualified with the 14th fastest time (3:58.72), Edison’s team of Pudder, Nate Green, Linscott and Larkins qualified with the 17th fastest time (4:02.82) Big Red’s team of Kabron Harris, Kirkpatrick, Snyder and Hoffman) qualified with the 20th fastest time (4:11.16) and Catholic Central’s team of Javier Descalzo, Colton Dobson, Cash Dobson and Santiago Descalzo qualified with the 21st fastest time (4:13.36).

Edison’s 200 medley relay team of Bernhart, Larkins, Pudder and Linscott qualified with the 18th fastest time (2:00.70).

Big Red, Indian Creek and Edison also had individuals and relay teams qualify on the girls’ side of things.

Big Red’s Kinsey Tucker qualified in the 100 backstroke with the 12th fastest time (1:09.45).

Indian Creek’s Gabby Boyuk, Allison Rawson and Sophie Doerr all qualified in two individual events. Boyuk qualified in the 50 freestyle with the 25th fastest time (:28.03) and in the 100 freestyle with the 24th fastest time (1:02.18). Rawson qualified in the 200 freestyle with the 20th fastest time (2:21.11) and in the 500 freestyle with the 14th fastest time (6:21.33). Doerr qualified in the 100 butterfly with the 30th fastest time (1:26.77) and in the 200 individual medley with the 31st fastest time (3:00.95).

Also for the Redskins, Hailee Hixenbaugh qualified in the 200 freestyle with the 30th fastest time (2:25.39), and Emma Doerr qualified in the 100 butterfly with the 31st fastest time (1:28.34).

Edison had two individual qualifiers. Leila Cable qualified in the 100 breaststroke with the 20th fastest time (1:21.78), and Mazzy Speedy qualified in the 100 butterfly with the 28th fastest time (1:22.49).

Big Red had all three relay teams qualify, Indian Creek had two and Edison had one.

Big Red’s 200 freestyle relay team of Gabriella Rea,Maddy Shreves, Magdalene McKenna and Tucker qualified with the 15th fastest time (1:55.77), and Indian Creek’s team of Rawson, Sophie Doerr, Hixenbaugh and Boyuk qualified with the 18th fastest time (1:58.76).

Indian Creek’s 400 freestyle relay team of Rawson, Ruby Howell, Hixenbaugh and Boyuk qualified with the 12th fastest time (4:22.91), Big Red’s team of Rea, Shreves, McKenna and Tucker qualified with the 16th fastest time (4:25.59) and Edison’s team of Sydney Frampton, Gracie Dray, Cable and Speedy) qualified with the 24th fastest time (4:41.15).

Big Red’s 200 medley relay team of Kailyn Sperry, Shreves, Tucker and McKenna qualified with the 12th fastest time (2:13.17) and Indian Creek’s team of Aaliyah Duke, Lucianna Pietro, Emma Doerr and Sophie Doerr qualified with the 20th fastest time (2:18.34).
