McShan leads Big Red to victory over River to end regular season
STEUBENVILLE — Nylah McShan scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and Big Red managed to hold off the visiting Pilots on Monday, 52-47, in a battle between OVAC 2A champion River and 5A runner-up Big Red.
McShan finished with a game-high 30, scoring 23 in the second half. Steubenville went into the fourth quarter down 36-31.
Kaylee Hagan led River with 20 points, making four 3-pointers. Reese Hobbs scored 12 for the Pilots.
Cianna Scurry scored nine for Big Red, which closes its regular season 14-7.
Big Red opens tournament play Wednesday hosting Zanesville in the Division III, East District bracket.
JM fends off Indian Creek
WINTERSVILLE — The John Marshall Monarchs claimed a road victory over newly-crowned OVAC 4A champion Indian Creek on Monday, 45-40.
Rilee Storm scored 20 points to lead John Marshall, followed by Kaylee White’s 13.
Storm made four 3-pointers in the victory. The junior also grabbed eight rebounds, tied for the team-high with Kalyn Reese. White dished six assists.
Indian Creek was led by Gracie Klinesmith’s 12.
John Marshall got off to a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, and the two teams played to a virtual standstill the rest of the way.
This was John Marshall’s fifth win in a row. Their next game is on Feb. 19 at Brooke.
Creek concludes ts regular season 13-9 and opens tournament play Thursday hoating River View.
Toronto falls to Malvern
TORONTO — The Toronto girls basketball team dropped a close 50-45 decision to Malvern on Monday night
Jayna Reeves led the Red Knights with 20 points, inlcuding three 3s, while Ttum Derrington added nine and JJ Rebich and Josey Dickinson tallied seven each.
The Red Knights close the regular season 9-13 and open tournament play at Catholic Central on Wednesday.

Big Red 4th in state duals
COLUMBUS – Steubenville finished fourth in the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division II state dual meet tournament Saturday at Bishop Watterson High School.
After defeating Perry, 39-25, in the quarterfinals, Big Red fell to eventual champion Buckeye, 33-31, in the semifinals.
In the third-fourth place match, Steubenville dropped a 42-33 decision to Bishop Watterson.
Defending state champion and top-ranked Brody Saccoccia (157) led three Big Red matmen with 3-0 records on the day. The Purdue University signee recorded a pair of technical falls and a 58-second pin. Also going 3-0 were Cole Harvey (113) and Ethan Llewellyn (165).
Harvey registered a major decision, pin in 1:40 and technical fall, while Llwwellyn had a pair of decisions and a pin in 1:04.
