STEUBENVILLE — In the midst of the four game slide, Big Red had struggled to come through with timely hits, could not seem to get off to a good start and did not seem to be able to get any breaks or bounces.

All of those things turned around in a hurry on Wednesday evening.

In a rematch with visiting Brooke, Steubenville got off to a good start, got timely hits with runners on and got some breaks to go there way on the way to a 10-1 thumping of the Bruins, avenging a loss from eight days prior.

Big Red jumped out early with five runs in the first and scored the first nine runs of the game, took advantage of five Brooke errors and were in control from the start.

“We jumped on them early and kept going,” Big Red head coach Fred Heatherington said. “We can be as good as we want to be, it’s all in our heads. If we have our heads on straight, we can play good baseball.

“It was good to have a fast start, and against the same pitcher (Parker McMahon) that beat us the last time. We were ready to play. When we come out ready to play, we can play.

“Hopefully this gives us some confidence. We want to get better every day, we have a long way to go.”

Three of the five runs in the first inning came with two outs. Two of the runs came on plays the Bruins (13-9) committed an error.

“It makes it very difficult when you get in a hole like that, Steubenville is a tough team to beat no matter what,” Brooke head coach Doug Costain said. “We came over here a week or so ago and walked out victorious, we knew that was going to be hard to do twice.

“We weren’t prepared to play and that’s on me. It’s a tough week, but it’s not going to get any easier for us. Our biggest opponent right now is ourselves. Every tough bounce went against us, we didn’t get any lucky hops, but we didn’t create any luck for ourselves either.

“We have to figure out how to worry about us and not beat ourselves, if we do that, we’ll be fine.”

Four different players had multi-hit days for Big Red (5-8).

Royal Mayo had a double and a single from the leadoff spot, while Matt Fabbro had a pair of base knocks and an RBI, Nolan Blackburn had three hits, including a double, Hayden Hicks had a double and an RBI, AJ Borsch drove in a pair of runs Maddox Gulan had two hits and drove in two runs.

Hicks had Brooke hitless through four innings on the mound and fired 12 strikeouts. A leadoff single in the fifth by Brooke’s Blaine Beatty broke up the no-hit bid, then, with two outs, Hicks plunked three-straight batters and was subsequently ejected.

From there, Noah Kokiko came on and fired a scoreless final 2 1/3 innings, his second scoreless relief appearance in as many days.
