Union Local takes advantage of chances to top Central
STEUBENVILLE — The Union Local softball team took advantage of what Catholic Central gave them.
Union Local tallied multiple runs in each of the first four innings as the Jets soared past the Crusaders, 13-1, in five innings via mercy rule on a sunny Friday evening at the Steve Zamana Softball Field.
Union Local pounded out 10 hits in the win – four of which were doubles – while also taking advantage of 12 walks and one error.
Catholic Central collected one hit – a single – on day, and the hosts took advantage of two walks and three errors by the Jets.
Evian Blakely went the distance inside the circle to collect the win for the Jets. She struck out nine and walked two.
The Blue and Gold used two pitchers in the game. Lexi Lathem started and took the loss. Lathem struck out one and walked 11 in 3 2/3 innings of work. She was replaced with two outs in the top of the fourth by Genna Free, who started the game at shortstop. Free pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, striking two and walking one.
Lily Blakely collected four hits in her team’s win. The catcher contributed two singles, two doubles and an RBI, Laken Vinskovich singled twice, walked twice and plated a pair of runs and Myah Martin tallied a double and a team-high three RBI. Also, Ella Pietranton produced a double, Alli Kellaway and Kyra Malcomb each added a base hit and Khloe Gallagher and Evian Blakely each brought home a run.
Genna Free finished with a single for Catholic Central’s lone hit.
Union Local tallied five runs in the top of the first inning, and the Jets had a runner tagged out for the third out of the inning on an attempted steal of home. The visitors recorded three hits – one single and two doubles – in the inning.
The Crusaders got a run back in the home half of the inning to cut their deficit down to 5-1. The Jets committed two errors in the inning leading to the run being scored.
Undaunted, the Jets countered with four more runs in the second to extend their advantage to 9-1. The victors recorded four singles in the inning.
The visitors from Belmont County collected two more runs in the third to increase their advantage to 11-1. The Red and White tallied one hit in the inning while taking advantage of three walks.
A two-run double in the fourth gave UL a 13-1 lead.
Catholic Central is scheduled to play a make up game against Bridgeport at 11 a.m. Saturday on the road.
Union Local is slated to play Shadyside at 5:30 p.m. Monday at home.
