Buckeye Local needs to ground Jets to stay in playoff race

CONNORVILLE — The Buckeye Local Panthers looked to have their offense going a couple of weeks ago.

Since then, though, the offense has stalled.

After a big second half rally against Pittsburgh Carrick in which the Panthers won for the second time in three weeks and scored a season high 36 points, Buckeye Local has been held off the scoreboard in back-to-back weeks.

Those losses, however, have come to two very good football teams, 5-1 Oak Glen and 4-2 Martins Ferry.

In fact, the Panthers five defeats this season have all come to very good teams, opponents with a combined record of 23-10, each of whom are in contention for playoff spots.

This week, the task is not any easier as the Panthers welcome Union Local to Ron Poblish Field inside World War II Memorial Stadium on Friday night. The Jets bring a 5-2 mark to Yorkville.

The Jets have a high-flying offense, entering the week averaging 36.7 points per game and a strong defense that allows just an average of 12.8 points per game.

Buckeye Local averages 12.3 points for per game on offense and are allowing an average of 35.7 points against.

It is an important game for the Jets. They sit in ninth place in Division V, Region 19. The top eight get at least one home game in the playoffs and the top 12 qualify for the post season this year.

The Panthers are also not out of the race in Division V, Region 17, sitting 18th, and an upset win would go a long way to getting them closer to the top 12 and keeping them in the hunt.

The opening kick Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
