Local products helps Franciscan men, women earn wins in their home openers
STEUBENVILLE — The Franciscan mens and womens basektball teams earned victories in their home openers on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and a local product contributed in both victories for the Barons.
The FUS men opened their home slate Wednesday night with a victory over Penn State New Kensington 105-59, led by 75 points from the bench.
Contributing to that season-high total from the bench was former Catholic Central standout Benji Rook.
Rook, who was the East District Player of the Year and a first team All-Ohio selection last season in helping Central to a regional appearance, netted six points, shooting 3 for 4 from the floor in his season debut for the Barons. He also had a rebound.
The win improved FUS to 3-0. They are back at home Saturday hosting Penn State Behrend.
On Thursday night, the FUS women defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny 99-44 in their home opener.
Contributing to the win was Madonna graduate Jazzy Melnyk, who recorded six points, 10 rebounds and an assist.
The Barons women, now 2-2, are also home on Saturday afternoon hosting Carlow.
