Weir, Brooke will send 18 to state swim meet

MORGANTOWN — The Weir High and Brooke swim teams will send a contingent of 18 to West Virginia University Feb. 16-17 to compete in the West Virginia State Championships.

The Red Riders’ girls qualified six swimmers with three of them in four events.

Katelyn Haspel, Anita Village, Kaitlyn Stumpf and Claire Stewart qualified in the 200 medley relay (2:11.54), Stewart, Nevaeh Colliers, Village and Mickayla Cook in the 200 free relay (1:56.45) and Stewart, Cook, Stumpf and Village in the 400 free relay (4:13.66).

Village qualified in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.62), Stumpf in the 200 IM (2:34.54) and 500 free (5:54.75), and Cook in the 200 free (2:14.60) and 500 free (5:58.49).

The Bruins’ foursome of Emily Donley, Bethany Harlan, Mary Ossman and Leah Caparros qualified in the 200 medley relay (2:05.30), 200 free relay (1:55.87) and the 400 free relay (4:12.78).

Caparros qualified in the 100 back (1:06.07), Donley the 100 back (1:10.80), Harlan the 100 free (1:04.14) and Ossman the 500 free (6:00.67).

Brooke freshman Noah Horvath qualified in the 200 IM (2:17.08), where he was the Region 1 champion, and the 100 back (1:01.78) and joined Tim Julio, Joseph Siudak and Damian Campbell in the 200 medley relay (1:58.03).

The Red Riders’ Wil Visnic, Tyler Virtue, Michael Miller and Isaac Piatt have qualified in the 200 medley relay (1:49.27) and 200 free relay (1:40.15).

Virtue also qualified in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.67), where he was the Region 1 champion, and the 100 free (52.90).

Visnic qualified in the 200 free (1:52.11) and 500 free (5:08.46) and Miller in the 100 fly (1:02.51) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.16).

The top three individuals and top two relay teams automatically qualified for the state championships.

The remaining 12 qualifiers for individual events and 10 relay teams from all regions combined rounded out the top 18 in each race.
