ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Freshman Kobe Mitchell exploded for a game-high 30 points as Harrison Central jumped out to a 10-point lead and never looked back in downing Barnesville 90-46 in Game 3 of the Buckeye 8 Challenge at OUE.

The Huskies (4-2) led by nine after one quarter before stretching their lead to 26 at halftime — 51-25.

Mitchell scored 21 points in the first half, eight straight as part of an 11-0 run that made the score 49-24 late in the second quarter.

“We thought he would have a decent year,” Huskies head coach Justin Clifford said of Mitchell, “and he has a really basketball IQ and he really understands the game and that really helps.”

Caden Dalton added 15 points for the Huskies and Logan Elliott had 10. All told, all 11 players that hit the floor scored.

“We’re playing a decent amount of guys and trying to get the tempo up a little bit, but it all starts on the defensive end with us,” Clifford said.

Luke Powell paced the Shamrocks (2-4) with 14 points.

“They were just so much more athletic,” Barnesville head coach Matt Johnson said. “And we didn’t execute well, but I don’t know if that would’ve made a difference.

“We have a lot of learning to do. We’re not a very old team, but we’ll take this and learn from it and get better from it.”

Barnesville visits Bellaire on Wednesday, while Harrison Central visits Indian Creek on Friday.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — St. Clairsville started the second half on a 16-5 run Saturday afternoon and used it as a catalyst for its 71-62 victory against Tusky Central in the third game of the Buckeye 8 Challenge inside Ohio University Eastern’s Physical Education and Recreation Center.

The Saints scored the final five points of the first half to take a one-point advantage into the locker room, but the Red Devils (5-1) regrouped for a strong second half.

“Really, it was business-like at halftime,” St. Clairsville head coach Kim Clifford said. “We just talked about how they were hurting us — and they hurt us in the second half, too — with a screen and kick to the corner . We had to get out on the guy in the corner.

“And, we shared the ball. We were balanced and we just played better in the second half.”

Craig Bober scored five of his 17 points as St. Clairsville scored the first eight points of the third period to take a 34-27 lead. Later, up five at 37-32, Kaden Blomquist and Ryan Busby converted back-to-back buckets making the score 42-32.

Busby led the Red Devils with 18 points, while Blomquist finished with 11. Justin Heatherington, who scored seven points in the third quarter, finished with 16.

“We passed the ball a lot better in the third,” Clifford said. “I think that was a big key.”

A Busby jumper gave St. C. a 47-39 advantage late in the third before TCC posted a run. Reece Blanchard scored four straight points making the score 47-43, but the Red Devils responded with a 13-3 run that stretched into the final period.

There, Busby had five points, Bober had four, and the Red Devils led by as much as 14.

St. Clairsville plays host to Wheeling Central on Wednesday.
