Jefferson County Elite pulls away late
CHILLICOTHE — Big innings have propelled the Jefferson County Elite 19A summer baseball team of late. Friday was no different.
Trailing Portsmouth 2-1 after five innings at Hoffman Field, the Steubenville-based squad scored twice in the sixth for a 3-2 advantage and then erupted for half-a-dozen tallies in the seventh to pull away for a 9-2 win in the opening game of the Jim Jadwin Memorial Tournament.
Clayton Criss paced the winners 16-hit attack with a single and three doubles that produced two runs. Andrew Kinney also drove in two runs with a pair of singles, while Alec McBane singled three times to knock in a run. George Ash doubled twice and plated a run. Aaron Ferguson and winning pitcher Caden Buxton each singled in runs.
Buxton went the distance, striking out nine, walking two and scattering four hits.
In the nightcap, Kinney and Connor Shultz combined on a six-hitter in a 6-0 shutout of Greenville.
Kinney struck out nine and allowed five hits in six innings.
Criss continued his hot hitting with a single and home run that accounted for three runs. McBane singled and tripled to drive in a run while Ash singled in a run. Zac Berger had two singles and Klay Cottis doubled.
Jefferson County was scheduled to face Post 757 at 2 p.m. today at VA Memorial Stadium. The 8-team tournament continues through the weekend.
