John Marshall rallies past Brooke for 4-2 win

Kyle Lutz DELIVERING — Brooke’s Andrew Coursin pitches against John Marshall on Wednesday.

MOUNDSVILLE — When it comes to baseball, sometimes one inning is all a team needs.

For John Marshall, it was the sixth against Brooke. Bruins’ pitcher Andrew Coursin was throwing a no-hitter before the Monarchs scored four runs on four hits, as they rallied to a 4-2 victory on Wednesday.

“Their pitcher threw great. Oh my gosh,” John Marshall coach Mark Cisar said. “When we did get a couple of baserunners, he controlled the running game. He was excellent. It’s one of those games where you feel unfortunate, because he threw such a good game. But, we were very fortunate.

“We put together a couple of hits. He walked a couple to give us a chance, put runners in scoring position and we happened to come through. We’re struggling at the plate right now, but we came through with some clutch hits and it’s a very big win for us.”

Reid Wiley supplied the first hit of the evening for John Marshall, connecting with two strikes. Derek Black and Dillon Wright then walked to load the bases.

Coursin bounced back a bit and got a strikeout, but Jacob Coffield tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run single.

After a pitching change, Bryce Rayl put John Marshall up for good, as he bought home a run on a single. Grant Swift then gave the Monarchs some insurance with the Monarchs’ fourth single of the inning, putting the score at 4-2.

“Andrew Coursin pitched a heckuva game,” Brooke coach C. J. Besece said. “He was still around the zone, and he was still pitching great. He’s a senior, and he wanted the ball, so I let him go as long as we thought he could go.

“He did great, and they started to put the bat on the ball. It was a great and competitive game (Wednesday). I don’t think we had any errors — we were fundamentally sound. We had three freshman in the infield starting, and they played great.”

Wiley Pratt had just as an impressive outing, going the distance for John Marshall. Although he only struck out one batter, he didn’t give up a walk and kept his pitch count in the 70s.

“No walks, make them put the ball in play. Honestly, he’s not going to strike a lot out,” Cisar said. “But, he controlled the strike zone, made them put the ball in play and worked fast. We had a couple of miscues on defense. I’m very pleased with him. It was a great first outing for him this year.”

The Monarchs got out of a jam in the first. Carson Lauttamus started the game off with a double. After getting to third on an error, the Monarchs’ defense tightened. They were able to get the tag out at home and Pratt forced a ground out to end the top half of the first.

“Great play. We pulled the infield in half way, and Derek Black got rid of the ball quick and Lance Finley made an excellent job of going to get the ball going to get the ball and coming back and making the tag. Lance has been playing really well for us this season,” Cisar said.

The Bruins also got out of a jam in the first. After Coursin walked the first two batters, Dillon Wright put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. However, Coursin struck out the next two to end the first inning without any damage.

Alexander Garrett plated the first run of the game for the Bruins, as he scored Blaise Buchmelter, who got on base with a single of his own.

In the top of the sixth, Coursin led off with a double. He scored when the Monarchs got a 6-4-3 double play to make it 2-0.

“I told them, ‘We’re right there. We’re going to get a win,'” Besece said. “I’m proud of our guys, and credit to John Marshall. They hung in there and kept fighting. They had their big inning. They’re a very good team, and it was beautiful baseball.”

Brooke tentatively travels to Catholic Central Friday night.
