Weir girls drop fifth straight

WEIRTON — The same problems that the Weir High girls basketball squad has endured over the past 12 days continued again on Monday, falling to Linsly 60-39.

“We had some chances to be competitive. You can’t go 1 for 9 shooting in the first quarter,” head coach Rick Stead said. “You can’t make only three or four field goals in each quarter. We were only about 25 percent shooting and 7 for 18 at the foul line. We shot about 200 free throws on Saturday, then our first (Monday) didn’t hit the rim.

“I tell the girls, ‘You have the capability to do anything you want to do.’ We have a solid basketball team. We just lack little fundamental issues like boxing out and setting your feet. There are certain things we can’t control.”

The Cadets were off and running in the opening quarter with a 12-1 scoring run and a 14-3 advantage heading into the second. A late 8-1 jolt catapulted them to a 31-16 halftime edge.

If there were not already, the floodgates opened in the third frame. Linsly outscored the Red Riders (5-9), 19-8, and led 50-24 after three quarters.

Monday’s setback marked Weir High’s fifth consecutive defeat.

“We need to be consistent in all of the things we do to be a good basketball team. Good teams don’t have off nights,” Stead said.

Monday also concluded games to be played before voting occurs for seeding purposes. The Red Riders hope that by defeating Wheeling Central twice and only losing to Oak Glen once, they may get the second seed or the third at worst. The Maroon Knights swept the Golden Bears, who only have one section win.

Carleigh Grimm led the Cadets with a game-high 31 points. Molly Heron netted 10 points.

For the Red Riders, Isabella Aperfine had a dozen points. Reagan Hoover and Sophia Aperfine scored six apiece. Leah Maley and Taylor Nutter were held to a combined nine points.
