Weir High’s Brueck, Oak Glen’s O’Connor win regional wrestling titles
FAIRMONT — A trio of wrestlers captured championships Saturday, as the West Virginia Class A/AA Region I tournament wrapped up its stay inside the Fairmont Fieldhouse.
Cameron’s Ian Bush (182 pounds), Oak Glen’s Kyler O’Connor (195) and Weir High’s Jordan Brueck (285) all stood atop the awards podium, while 19 others qualified in the top four of their respective weight classes in punching their tickets to the state tournament.
The Golden Bears qualified eight individuals to lead the 22-member northern panhandle contingent. Cameron is sending five, Tyler Consolidated four and Magnolia two. Madonna and Weir have one each.
Bush, a returning state runner-up, pinned Fairmont Senior’s Zach Anderson for his title. He also had falls in the quarters and semis.
O’Connor, who placed third at the state a season ago, also pinned his way to his title. He took down St. Marys’ Haiden Davis in the finals in 3:00.
Brueck, a fourth-place finisher in last winter’s state tournament, earned his title with a 3-2 decision over Fairmont Senior’s Iain Campbell. He recorded falls in his first two matches. Other Golden Bears headed to state competition are Logan Davis (106-2nd); Clayton Lamb (120-2nd); Kaden Lundy (126-3rd); Braxton Dlugopolski (138-2nd); Ethan Lively (145-4th); Chase Smith (152-4th); and Dylan Heinrich (170-3rd).
In addition to Bush, the Dragons are also sending Isaiah Bryan (106-4th); Ashton Hoge (120-4th); Payton Neely (132-2nd); and Deacon Carmichael (160-4th).
The Silver Knights quartet includes Danny McCune (106-3rd); Kaden Huffman (113-4th); Sean Winfrey (152-2nd); and Trenton Huffman (160-2nd).
The Blue Eagles qualifiers are Lucas Zambotti (113-3rd) and Jason Beisel (132-3rd).
The Blue Dons will be represented by Evan Daniel (182-3rd) and the Wildcats by Jasup Spragg (126-4th).
Fairmont Senior claimed the team title with 235 points. Oak Glen was next with 169.
The 74th annual state tournament will be held at Mountain Health Arena in Huntington. It is scheduled for four days this year with Class AAA taking the mats on Monday and Tuesday. Class A/AA will conclude the week on Wednesday and Thursday.
