Big Red, Creek to meet a 3rd time this season in sectional tourney

Area baseball teams on the Ohio side of the river found out who they will face and when they will play to open their tournament runs on Sunday.

Four local teams will open the dance at home, while three teams do not have to go very far to see a familiar opponent.

In the Division II, East 1 bracket, Indian Creek and Steubenville will meet for a third time this season at 5 p.m. next Tuesday at Vaccaro Field in the sectional final. The Redskins are the No. 10 seed, while Big Red is seeded seventh.

Big Red won the first two meetings — 2-1 in Mingo Junction on April 5 and 9-2 on Thursday.

The winner of the third meeting will advance to a May 24 district semifinal with either No. 1 seed River View or the winner of No. 16 Morgan-No. 19 Philo, who play in a sectional semifinal on Saturday. The winner of that game will test the top-seeded Black Bears on May 18.

The district final is set for 5 p.m. on May 26 at a site to be determined.

In Division III, Edison drew the No. 6 seed in the East District and will host No. 9 Buckeye Trail at 5 p.m. on Monday. The Wildcats, if they advance, would face the winner of No. 4 Martins Ferry-No. 14 Bellaire on May 19 in the sectional final.

On the same end of the bracket, Harrison Central grabbed the seventh seed and will face rival Buckeye Local, the No. 13 seed, for a third time this season at 5 p.m. on Monday at Mazeroski Field inside Sally Buffalo Park.

The Huskies defeated the Panthers, 4-3, in extra innings on opening day on March 27, then 11-4 on March 29.

The winner will meet the winner of No. 3 Ridgewood-No. 12 West Muskingum in a sectional final on May 19.

The Huskies or Panthers could face Edison in the district semifinal on May 24.

The district final is set for 5 p.m. on May 26 at a site TBD.

In Division IV, defending champion Toronto will begin its quest to continue its record streak of 25 straight sectional titles as the East District’s top seed, hosting Catholic Central, the No. 14 seed, at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Knights Baseball Complex.

The Red Knights defeated the Crusaders, 17-2, at the Knights Baseball Complex in their lone meeting this season on April 14.

The winner will face the victor from No. 10 Malvern-No. 13 Caldwell on May 19 in the sectional final.

The Red Knights could potentially get a rematch with No. 3 seed Shadyside, who defeated Toronto, 2-1, in the OVAC Class 2A final on Friday, in the district semifinal on May 24.

The Tigers open with Tuscarawas Catholic Central on Saturday.

The district final is slated for 5 p.m. on May 26 at a site TBD.
