COVID puts a damper on Week 5 football schedule
Four games in the Herald-Star/Daily Times coverage area scheduled for this week on the gridiron have been affected by COVID-19.
Buckeye Local, for the second time this season, saw a game go by the wayside due to the virus when it found out its game scheduled for Thursday night at Monroe Central was canceled roughly eight hours before the scheduled opening kick.
The Seminoles athletic department announced on Twitter around 11 a.m. the game was being canceled.
The Panthers athletic department and coaches were looking to pick up replacement opponent for this week on short notice throughout the day on Thursday. As of late Thursday, they were still looking.
Buckeye Local’s Week 2 game against Union Local was also canceled due to the virus after a COVID issue popped up within the Barnesville program after the Panthers played the Shamrocks in Week 1, putting Buckeye Local into quarantine.
Right around the same time as the Monroe Central announcement, Indian Creek announced on Twitter its game at St. Clairsville scheduled for tonight was also canceled.
It is the Redskins first game this season affected by the virus.
St. Clairsville replaced Indian Creek with another OVAC opponent, Linsly, and will meet the Cadets at Red Devil Stadium tonight.
Linsly, who is scheduled to face Big Red next week, had been scheduled to travel to 3-0 Princeton.
Indian Creek’s next opponent is scheduled to be Bellaire on Sept. 24 on homecoming night. There has not been any announcement made about the status of that game yet.
One local team was successful in finding a new opponent after COVID issues caused a cancelation, as Harrison Central announced Thursday it reached an agreement to host Gates Mills Hawken tonight in Cadiz.
The Hawks are 2-2 and are currently 14th in Division IV, Region 13.
The Huskies, who are also 2-2 and sit 15th in Division V, Region 17, were scheduled to play East Liverpool, but the Potters announced Wednesday that COVID issues within the program would prevent them from being able to play.
Hawken was originally scheduled to face Orwell Grand Valley.
Earlier in the week, Brooke also had to cancel its scheduled trip to North Marion tonight due to COVID issues.
At least one area game has been affected by COVID-related cancelations and schedule changes each week so far this season.
