STEUBENVILLE — Six different players found the end zone Friday as Big Red rebounded from last week’s tough loss with a 48-13 thumping of Pittsburgh Taylor Allderdice inside Harding Stadium.

The Steubenville touchdown parade started early as junior quarterback Phaeton Hill hit senior wide receiver Inky Jones for a 58-yard strike on the game’s opening play from scrimmage. Reno Saccoccia’s crew traveled 72 yards on its next possession which ended when Hill found Ivan Buggs for a 20-yard TD.

With the victory, Big Red, which entered the week ranked eighth in the Division III, Region 9 computer standings, improved to 6-2. Allderdice, considered a Division I school by Ohio enrollment standards, dropped to 2-4.

“The two most important things I took away from tonight where — the quick start and the finish we had with a lot of younger kids playing in the third and fourth quarters,” Saccoccia said. “We did some things right tonight and we didn’t have any turnovers.

“Going forward, we have to keep working hard and we have to keep getting better.”

Big Red finished with 508 yards of total offense (332 coming on the ground and 176 through the air). Junior tailback Dylan Bozica led the ground attack with 107 yards on 14 carries.

Meanwhile, freshman Jalen Minniefield made his first varsity game one to remember — collecting 92 yards on 11 rushing attempts.

Hill completed eight of his 17 passes for 176 and the two scores.

Following Big Red’s second score, the Dragons, who were playing their second game of the week, marched 52 yards to make it 14-7. The Allderdice drive was aided by four penalties against Steubenville. The touchdown came via a 3-yard run by sophomore Terrell James.

Steubenville answered with an 11 play, 78-yard drive. Junior Spencer Ostovich did the honors on a 13-yard run. Bozica capped the first half scoring with his 9-yard burst.

The score moved to 35-7 early in the third thanks to a 5-yard run by sophomore Elijah Mullins.

His touchdown finished a 73-yard drive. Mullins scored again later in the quarter with a 1-yard plunge.

Allderdice temporarily stopped the running clock when Cordae Welms hauled in an 11-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Azerick Jetter.

Freshman Kyleigh Hopkins got his initial varsity carry with 1:42 left to play and turned it into an 8-yard touchdown to close the scoring.

Sophomore Austyn Roberts was a perfect six for six on extra point attempts.

Jones had three receptions for 84 yards to lead Big Red’s receivers. Buggs grabbed a pair for 57.

The Big Red defense held Allderdice to just 38 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Jetter did complete 10 passes for 163 yards. Noah Johnston had three catches for 70 yards.

“Our concern right now is to continue to improve,” Saccoccia said. “It was said a long time ago in sports — if you are not improving, you are getting worse. We want to keep improving.”

“Like I said I was glad our first offense and our first defense got off to quick starts. I really want to emphasize that. But, I also was happy that our younger guys got to play at the end of the game.”
