Big Red to hold golf tryouts

STEUBENVILLE – Any student interested in trying out for the Steubenville Big Red golf team needs to report to Blackmoor Golf Course at 8 a.m. on Friday.

Candidates need to make sure they have an updated physical and insurance before they will be permitted to participate.

Candidates should bring their clubs, shoes, etc., and be prepared to practice. Proper attire required.

Red Riders to sell tickets

WEIRTON – Weir High will sell football tickets from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 11 and from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 12-15 at the high school. Current season tickets will be held until Aug. 18.

Cost of the four-game package is $20.

Also being sold is a 10-event adult ticket strip for $50 that may be used an any Weir varsity athletic event during the school year.

A student pass will be sold for $50 and that will be good for any home athletic event for the school year.

Marland Heights 5K set

WEIRTON – The Marland Heights 5-K Classic, hosted by the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, will be run along the city streets on Marland Heights on Aug. 15.

The event will feature a two-mile walk and youth races for children 12 and under. A special high school team points challenge will be contested.

Registration forms are now available at the Millsop Community Center and online at: mcc-weir.tripod.com.

The cost to enter is $14 in advance for the adult races ($10 for teens) and $2 for youth fun run participants.

Race T-shirts will be given to the first 80 participants for the major races and walk.

Following the race, there will be a special awards ceremony and cookout for all participants and event sponsors.

EAST SPRINGFIELD – The annual Catholic Central Athletic Boosters golf scramble fundraiser will be an 8 a.m. shotgun Saturday at Spring Hills Golf Course. Cost is $200 per foursome.

Burgettstown approves contract

BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. – Borough officials opened refuse collection service bids July 23 and awarded the contract to R and K Disposal Inc., the low bidder.

The rates are $16.67 per household per month. The senior citizen rate is $15 per month. The three-year contract begins Friday. There is no annual price increase.

Knorr earns academic honor

STEUBENVILLE – Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s basketball player Caleb Knorr was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2013-14 Honors Court.

The honor is given to NCAA or NAIA basketball student-athletes in their junior or senior year according to academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Knorr, a double major in psychology and communication, was a junior last season and is the first student-athlete at FUS to be named to the NABC’s Honors Court.

“This is a well-deserved honor for Caleb. He lives out the virtue of fortitude in all aspects of his life,” Baron basketball head coach John Lamanna said. “This is evident in his academic achievements and the courage he possesses on the basketball floor.

“It is a blessing to have Caleb as a member of this program. He is truly an ambassador for the university.”

STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red Booster Club has selected the 2014 Lew Giammarco Booster Appreciation-Kick Off Banquet honorees.

Honorees are Paul Filtz, Gary Kessler, Tom Mitchell, Tom Timmons and Ron Salvino. Tom DiMichael and Walter Mason Jr. are the deceased honorees.

Tickets are available for the July 27 event set for 2 p.m. at the high school commons for $10 and can be purchased at the high school office between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, or at the next booster meeting, which is set for 6 p.m. Monday.

St. John basketball camp slated

BELLAIRE – The 25th-annual St. John Central Basketball Camp will be held Monday through July 25 at the high school gym in Bellaire. The camp will again be under the direction of Lady Irish head coach Bubba Kapral.

Several speakers will be featured including: West Liberty University men’s coach Jim Crutchfield, Monroe Central’s Scooter Tolzda, former Beallsville head coach Casey Tolzda, OUE’s E.J. Schodzinski and Hall of Fame basketball official Mike Coyne.

All campers will receive a camp T-shirt and green basketball. The camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game while also featuring several contests.

Campers are encouraged to bring a lunch and drink as a short lunch period will be provided. Camp sessions run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

Cost of the camp is $35. Each additional family member is $25.

STEUBENVILLE – Steuben Striders will host its final meet of the summer today at the Harding Middle School Track Complex.

NEW YORK – Derek Jeter’s final All-Star appearance has helped boost television ratings for the game.

The American League’s 5-3 win Tuesday in Minneapolis averaged more than 11.3 million viewers on Fox, up from 11 million for last year’s game at the Mets’ Citi Field in New York. The rating was up 9 percent for the first full half-hour, when the retiring Yankees shortstop first stepped to the plate.

The network said Wednesday that the 7.0 fast national rating was the highest since 2010. The 2012 edition set a record low with a 6.8.

Ratings represent the percentage of homes with televisions tuned to a program.

Kent State at OSU slated at noon

COLUMBUS – Kent State and Ohio State will kick off at noon on Sept. 13 at Ohio Stadium.

The game will be televised on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, the Big Ten announced on Wednesday.

Eight of Ohio State’s 2014 games now have a start time, including a record five night games: Aug. 30 vs. Navy, noon, at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium; Sept. 6, Virginia Tech, 8 p.m.; Sept. 13, Kent State, noon; Sept. 27, Cincinnati, 6 p.m.; Oct. 18, Rutgers, 3:30 p.m.; Oct. 25, at Penn State, 8 p.m.; Nov. 1, Illinois, 8 p.m.; Nov. 8, at Michigan State, 8 p.m.

Virginia Tech, WVU to meet in 2017

LANDOVER, Md. – Virginia Tech and West Virginia will renew their football rivalry at FedEx Field in 2017.

The game will be played on Sept. 2, 2017, at the home of the Washington Redskins in Landover, Maryland. FedEx Field officials announced the matchup Tuesday.

It will mark Virginia Tech’s fourth appearance at FedEx Field since 2004. West Virginia played James Madison there in 2012 and also will play BYU at FedEx Field in 2016.

West Virginia and Virginia Tech, both former members of the Big East, last met in 2005.

After 2017, they’ll also play in 2021 in Morgantown, West Virginia, and 2022 in Blacksburg, Va.

Sidney Crosby will not have surgery

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins say captain Sidney Crosby doesn’t need surgery on his injured wrist.

Crosby dealt with a wrist injury during the playoffs. The Penguins announced Tuesday on Twitter that “after seeking additional medical advice, doctors have decided not to perform surgery on Sidney Crosby’s wrist.”

The team says he’ll keep receiving treatment and be evaluated ahead of training camp in September.

Crosby had just one goal and eight assists in 13 playoff games. The Penguins were eliminated in the second round by the New York Rangers.

Boil order lifted on Marland Heights

WEIRTON – The boil order for portions of Marland Heights was lifted at 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the Weirton Area Water Board.

The order was in effect for the 3900 block of Bright Way from Elmhurst to Swearingen Road, the 1100, 1200 and 3900 blocks of Hanlin Way from Lindberg to Palisades Drive and all of Glencarin and Elmhurst streets as a result of system upgrades.

Trial set for inmate who escaped

CLARKSBURG – A September trial is set for an inmate charged with escaping from a federal prison in Morgantown.

Eugene Cobbs was arrested in Mexico last month. He is charged with escaping from FCI Morgantown on April 10, 2013.

The 43-year-old Cobbs crashed a small plane carrying $24 million worth of cocaine in Wheeling in 2004. He fled then and was captured in Mexico in 2008. He was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute and for flying without an airman’s certificate.

Online court records show Cobbs pleaded not guilty to the escape charge on Friday. His trial is set for Sept. 9 in federal court in Clarksburg. If convicted of escape, Cobbs faces an additional five years in prison.

WHEELING – The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference will host its ninth-annual free youth football clinic on July 27 in conjunction with the Rudy Mumley OVAC All-Star Charity Football Classic presented by Huntington Bank and WTOV-TV at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. with the clinic running from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It will be directed by OVAC football coaches, including members of coach Chris Daugherty’s Wheeling Park High School football staff. Additionally, the Bethany College football staff will assist with the clinic.

The instructors will teach the basic fundamentals of football with a focus on building self-esteem. The clinic is free and open to boys and girls ages 6-13.

Bridge demolition planned

WEIRTON – The West Virginia Division of Highways has announced a road closure and traffic adjustments to allow for the demolition of the existing Colliers Way Bridge.

Through July 18, both east- and westbound traffic will be closed on U.S. 22 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to allow for the demolition of the existing bridge. Traffic will be maintained through the use of the Colliers Way exit and entrance ramps. Traffic also will be directed onto the constructed portion of the new Colliers Way Bridge.

DeLeonardis sinks hole-in-one

RICHMOND – On July 6, the Blackmoor Men’s League had an event at Blackmoor Golf Club and Johnny DeLeonardis made a hole-in-one on hole No. 12. He used a pitching wedge for the 95-yard hole. Witnesses were Larry Bails, Craig Carpico and Greg Huminenny.

P.V. Classic to be held in Fairmont

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The fifth annual P.V. Classic basketball tournament will be held at Fairmont and East Fairmont High Schools Aug. 8-10.

Entry fee will be $175 per team with a July 26 deadline.

Catholic Central plans softball camp

STEUBENVILLE – Coach Jim DiCarlo and the Catholic Central softball team are putting on a free softball clinic at the high school field July 14-16 – weather permitting.

The camp is open to girls in fifth through ninth grades. Bishop Mussio students are strongly encouraged to attend.

Toronto continues basketball camp

TORONTO – The fourth-annual Toronto Youth Basketball Camp for boys and girls will run Thursday through Sunday.

Camp time is 10 a.m. to noon at the Toronto High School gym.

The camp is under the direction of Red Knights boys head coach John Leary and members of the boys and girls coaching staffs.

Cost of the camp is $15 and all participants will receive a camp T-shirt.

Dorn back again at Ohio Amateur

CINCINNATI – Four former champions plan to tee it up Tuesday in the opening round of the 108th Ohio Amateur at Coldstream Country Club.

Among them are two-time winner Robert Gerwin and defending champ Andrew Dorn. Gerwin won his titles in 1996 and 2001, while Dorn, who plays at Coastal Carolina, held off Ohio State’s Michael Bernard down the stretch to win a year ago at Brookside Country Club in Canton.

Dorn went on to qualify for the U.S. Open three weeks ago at Pinehurst, where he missed the cut.

Other past Ohio Am champs include Alan Fadel, who won the last time the event was held at Coldstream in 1995, and Peter Hammar (1987).

The 144-player field faces four rounds of medal play, with the final 18 holes set for Friday.

Jim Brown says ’64 title ring stolen

CLEVELAND – Browns Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown says his 1964 NFL championship ring being auctioned online was stolen from him.

Brown’s ring is up for bidding on www.lelands.com until July 25. As of Monday, the highest bid was for $33,275. Brown tells cleveland.com that a claim by the auction company that he authenticated the ring is “a lie.” Brown says he was unaware the ring was being auctioned off.

Brown, who works as a Browns special adviser, says the ring was stolen from him more than 40 years ago.

One of the greatest players in NFL history, Brown rushed for 12,312 yards in nine seasons. In ’64, he rushed for 1,446 yards and scored seven touchdowns as the Browns won the title – the last for any major Cleveland sports franchise.

FUS to host tennis tournament

STEUBENVILLE – Franciscan University of Steubenville will host the Father Michael Scanlan Tennis Tournament July 18-20 at Belleview Park.

The tournament began in the 1980s as a public event. Eventually it became an intramural tournament for students only, before coming to an end. Scanlan was heavily involved in athletics during his tenure as FUS from 1974-2000. He often played tennis with the students. He retired in 2011 and moved to the Third Order Regular motherhouse in Loretto, Pa.

The tournament will have men’s and women’s brackets, men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and a junior bracket for players under 18. Cost is $20 per person or per doubles team.

Concessions will be provided each day. Participants will receive a T-shirt and one complimentary meal.

Pens sign Downie

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins signed free-agent forward Steve Downie to a one-year, $1 million deal Wednesday, a day after signing four players.

The 27-year-old Downie had four goals, 20 assists and 106 penalty minutes last season in 62 games for Colorado and Philadelphia. Downie has 59 goals, 103 assists and 766 penalty minutes in 336 regular-season games in seven seasons with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Colorado.

On Tuesday, the Penguins signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, forward Blake Comeau and goalie Thomas Greiss, and re-signed forward Marcel Goc.
