Spring luncheon

at Crestview Inn

The Jefferson County Joint Vocational School culinary arts department will hold a spring luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Crestview Inn located inside the school.

It is open to the public.

The menu will include field greens salad with honey-lime vinaigrette; stuffed potato soup, golden baked walleye, vegetable orzo with lentils, garlic shrimp, homemade potato gnocchi with marinara sauce, lemon blueberry trifle and strawberry pie.

Cost is $12 per person.

Event to promote organ donation

The James Funeral Home in Follansbee will host the second Gift of Life Awareness Event held by the Center for Organ Recovery and Education at 4 p.m. April 1.

A representative of the center will be on hand to discuss organ donation, and an organ recipient will be on hand to comment.

In observance of Organ Donation Month, green lights will be shown on the funeral home throughout April.

Brooke Library

to show film

The Brooke County Public Library in Wellsburg will be showing the PG-rated film “Life of Pi,” at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Based on the bestselling novel by Yann Martel, the movie involves Pi Patel, who finds himself stranded on a lifeboat with the only survivor, a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

Regional garden

club meeting set

The Ohio Association of Garden Clubs Region 12 will meet April 20 at the Hopedale Social Hall.

Sign-in and coffee hour will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and a covered dish will be held at noon.

Rita Mullet will speak on “Hostas” at 1 p.m. Her garden has more than 500 varieties of hostas and will be on the regional tour in June.

Three workshops will be presented by Marilou Rupert and Jackie Martz. Topics will include writing a flower show schedule; how to win a blue ribbon; and arrangements, start to finish, along with flower show etiquette.

There will OAGC items available for purchase and a basket drawing, with each club bringing a basket of items or one large item for it.

A flea market table where all members bring items from home for the table will be available, and there will be an educational exhibit by the horticulture chairman. Each club is to bring a door prize for a drawing.

The cost is $15 per person, and it is open to the public. Junior members are free.

Membership drive is under way

The Brooke County Federation of Democratic Women’s annual membership drive for 2013-14 is under way.

Dues are $10 per year. Membership automatically includes membership in the West Virginia Federation of Democratic Women and the National Federation of Democratic Women.

This year, the WVFDW will serve as host of the National Democratic Women’s Convention to be held in Charleston.

Alpha Mu Chapter

members meet

The March 6 meeting of the Alpha Mu Chapter of DKG was held at Ponderosa Restaurant in Carrollton with Darlene Smith, president, presiding.

Cicely Worthington of the hospitality committee read a poem by Emily Dickinson, and Jan Primack said grace.

Carole Thorne led the initiation program welcoming Diane Thomas, who was presented a red rose. Participants in the ceremony were Joyce Ferguson, Cynthia Harrah, Linda Holub and Primack.

In old business, it was announced that yearbooks are available, and the “The Voice” is available on e-mail. Ferguson noted the children’s books collected would be split between the Jefferson County Fourth Street Health Center in Steubenville and the doctor’s office in Carrollton.

CarolynLee Barrett expressed appreciation for Christmas items sent to Martha Manor in Steubenville, while Ferguson said thanks came from the Golden Age for Christmas items members donated in December.

In new business, it was announced that the state convention will be held April 12-14 at the Columbus Hilton, which will include a tour of the statehouse. Smith, Seck and Juanita Whisman will attend the convention. Smith will attend the executive meeting Friday evening. Forms are available online for members wanting to attend the convention that marks the 75th anniversary of DKG.

In committee reports, it was announced that the personal growth and services committee will collect for Hounds’ Haven in Jefferson County and the animal protective league of Carroll County at the April meeting. The professional growth committee sponsored a fundraising drawing won by Barbara Pritts. The deadline for scholarship applications is April 18.

The education and excellence committee will host the April meeting which will be attended by state official Pat Cermack. The state project this year involves support for early education careers. The Founders Day program will be in May.

• Indian Creek Middle School students will have their art projects on display at Eastern Gateway Community College through April 2. Gina Judy is their teacher.

• Diana McElwain, who retired March 1, will present a program at the National Science Teachers Association meeting in Houston.

Tri-State Young

Marines event set

The Tri-State Young Marines will be hosting a night of movies, swimming, dancing and games at the Millsop Community Center in Weirton on April 5 from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

All area youth in grades five through eight are invited to attend. Children must be signed in and out by an adult.

The cost is $10 per child, which includes a slice of pizza and a drink. Other concessions will be available at additional cost.

The group’s staff and parents will be supervising all activities.

Retired teachers

to meet April 9

The Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association will meet April 9 at the Richmond United Methodist Churcch with the business meeting beginning at 11 a.m.

Alan Kearns from the ORTA Members Benefits Advisers will be the speaker.

A noon luncheon will follow with the menu featuring turkey and mashed potatoes, green beans, perfection salad, rolls, beverage and dessert.

Author to speak

at Bethany event

Author Rick Lowery will be the featured speaker for the 58th- annual Oreon E. Scott Lectures to be held April 8-9 at Bethany College’s Mountainside Conference Center.

Lowery is a dean and adjunct professor of Hebrew Bible at Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky and author of several books on biblical studies and social and ecological justice.

He’s currently writing a book titled “Genesis and Human Rights,” which will be the focus of this year’s event, and his many writings include blogs for the Huffington Post.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. April 8 at the conference center.

The Timothy Luncheon will be held at noon, and the day will conclude with dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. worship service led by Lowery at Bethany Memorial Church and a reception with Bethany College President Dr. Scott D. Miller at Christman Manor at Pendleton Heights.

The Oreon E. Scott Lectures are funded through the Oreon E. Scott Foundation, which was established to strengthen the Christian Church and support Disciples-related colleges and institutions.

The first Oreon E. Scott Lecture was held in 1956 with Professor Arthur M. Schlesinger, Harvard University historian, as lecturer.

Gadabouts hear

plans for trips

At their March meeting held at St. Florian Hall, the Gadabouts played an entertaining card game and were updated on various trips.

John Zak presided and recognized birthdays and anniversaries as well as members on the prayer list. Dino Rossi gave devotions.

Jasper Wamsley won the 50/50 drawing which was conducted by Ron Fallert and Betty Zak. Door prizes furnished by Okey and Sondra Nestor were won by Regina Truax, Helen Sweeney, Betty Zak, Mary Cox, Rose Marie Harlan, Jean Morelli and Shirley Ohalek. The drawing for the door prizes was conducted by Frank and Carol Wisnieski.

Extension offers gardening tips

The Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service will hold a series of gardening workshops at 6 p.m. on Thursdays at Brooke Hills Park.

At the first, to be held Thursday, Extension Specialist Lewis Jett will discuss making the most use of the WVU Garden Calendar.

At the next, on April 4, Ohio County Extension agent John Miller will discuss using raised beds in home gardens.

On April 11, Pleasant County Extension agent Claude Marra will discuss soil conservation and soil sciences, including understanding a soil test report and improving soil’s quality for flower beds and other gardens.

On April 18, Brooke County Extension agent Norm Schwertfeger will discuss successful home gardening techniques. Participants also are encouraged to bring plants or seeds to trade.

The WVU Extension Service has a number of helpful resources about gardening and agriculture. They range from the online Gardening 101 series to specific information about pests, soil, bees and other topics found at www.anr.ext.wvu.edu.

Deli-style luncheon

before matinee

In honor of Steubenville High School’s upcoming spring production of “CATS!” being performed at SHS, the Friends of Steubenville Fine Arts are planning a New York deli-style luncheon in honor of the Broadway favorite.

The play will be performed March 21-24 with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee at 3 p.m.

The luncheon will be held in the high school commons prior to the March 24 matinee performance. The menu will consist of pastrami and roast beef sandwiches, hot soups, potato salad, homemade pierogies, beverages and New York cheesecake. The cost is $15 per person and benefits the SHS Fine Arts Department.

Blood drive at

Moose lodge

The Wellsburg Women of the Moose will sponsor an American Red Cross blood drive on March 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Moose Lodge located at 844 Main St., Wellsburg.

Morning doughnuts and hot lunch will be provided to all presenting donors.

The blood drive is open to the public, and all eligible donors are welcome to attend.

SAA meeting

The Steubenville Art Association’s next meeting will be held March 20 at Historic Fort Steuben, 120 S. Third St., Steubenville, beginning at 7 p.m.

SAA member Mary “Sis” Keenan will present “The How To’s of Art Fairs.” Social hosts are Arlene MacQuown, chairwoman, and Kim Hohlmayer, Diana Holcome and Mary Householder.

Wells Township

Seniors to meet

The Wells Township Senior Citizens will hold their monthly meeting at 1 p.m. Friday at the Wells Township Community Center located on Steuben Street in Brilliant.

The lunch will be cabbage and noodles and kielbasa. Participants can bring a dessert if they’d like.

Normally, meetings are held on the last Friday of the month but the March gathering is a week early because of Good Friday.

All seniors citizens from Wells Township can attend. Membership is $5 per year with memberships accepted at any time. Meetings include lunch, fellowship, door prizes, a 50-50 drawing and an occasional speaker.

host luncheon

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 415 Adams St., Steubenville, will hold its monthly soup and sandwich luncheon on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The featured soups are lentil, potato and chili. Sandwiches include ham salad, egg salad and barbequed ham. Desserts, coffee, tea and cold drinks also are provided.

Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children age 12 and under. Carryouts also are available.

Brooke meeting

The Brooke County Federation of Democratic Women have moved the March meeting to Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Follansbee Library because of a schedule conflict.

The W.Va. Federation of Democratic Women “Day at the Legislature” is being held Thursday at the state capitol in Charleston, which all women are invited to attend.

Seniors meet

The Three Score Seniors held their February meeting at Undo’s in Weirton with President Cookie Veltri presiding.

Entertainment Chair Rosemary Gaynor introduced Donahue and Son. Dave Watkins will provide the March entertainment.

Tour Chair Regina Truax announced the following trips:

Veltri reminded members to observe the rules and remember the doors don’t open until 4:45 p.m. A change in the by-laws will mean no restrictions on the number of meetings members need to attend. Dues were increased to $5, and dinner cost increased to $12.

Hospitality Chair Jim Hare gave prizes to Harold Elliott, Lee Roy Edwards, Joe Pulice, Viola Blanc, Marge Serfini, Sam Lescallette, Viola Blanc. Betty Virtue gave dinners to Pat Evano, Joan Gallagher, Honey Moore, Margaret Chapman, Eileen Mrvos, Joe Evano and Alma Wansack.

Class of 1964

plans reunion

Catholic Central High School’s Class of 1964 met to plan the 50-year class reunion with 13 classmates and friends attending.

Those attending decided to hold the reunion June 6-7, 2014, and those present are investigating event sites and plan to report at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. April 3 at Lancelot’s Restaurant in Wintersville. All classmates are encouraged to attend.

The Greater Wheeling Area Chapter No. 280 of the Mended Hearts Inc. will host a friends and family CPR training session at 6 p.m. Monday.

The training will be held in conference room B at the back of the cafeteria of Ohio Valley Medical Center with instruction provided by Robert Fanning and Janet Trovatovass.

Seniors meet

The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met April 22 at the Roosevelt Senior Center with President Susan Kulstad presiding.

Citizens meet

Doris Matyas presided at the Toronto Senior Citizens meeting held Feb. 28, with Lola Swanagan offering the blessing before the covered-dish dinner.

Reports were given by Shirley Rebich, Joyce Dobbs and Ross Dye.

Swanagan discussed future trips, announcing that payments are due at the next meeting.

The 50/50 was won by Ross Dye. Door prize winners were Pat Pfabe, Linda Dye, Shirley Rebich, Arlene Zahniser, Irene Miller, Barbara Lyons, Eileen Emery, Theresa Troski, Irma Straka, Dolly Robinson, Laura Mamula, Duke Pfabe and Joyce Dobbs.

Bingo winners were Doris Matyas, Barbara Lyons, Richard Dobbs and Debbie Custer.

The next meeting will be held March 14 at the Roosevelt Building.

Pork loin dinner

at E.S. center

The East Springfield Community Center will host a fundraiser roast pork loin dinner on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The center is located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department.

The menu will include roast pork loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, sauerkraut, green beans, applesauce, rolls, dessert and drink. Cost is $7.

First degree at Mingo Knights

The Mingo Knights of Columbus of Msgr. Joseph F. Dooley Council No. 4361 has scheduled a first degree for 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the council hall.

Candidates for the first degree are to be there between 7 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Members are asked to attend the degree and welcome new brother knights.

The degree is open to all Catholic men 18 or older, wanting to become a knight in the Mingo Junction, Richmond, Brilliant, Steubenville, Toronto and Wintersville areas.

The Jefferson County Promotion and Education Committee held a surprise going-away party for Janene Smith, who has served as the bureau office administrator since Nov. 1, 2001.

The event was held at the home of Joy Sargeant and was planned by Mary Ellen Grafton, chairman; Jeanne Roberts, membership chairman; and Ellen Swickard.

Grafton read the devotions, and Roberts gave the invocation.

The March Agriculture Week Baby presentation was discussed with a layette, food gift cards and gift cards to McDonald’s if there are older children in the family planned. A baby shower will be held in April for the child at the gym of the former Bantam Ridge School, where the office is now located.

The annual cupcake war at the Jefferson County Fair was discussed. Half of the money from the auction of the cupcakes goes to the winning participant, and the remainder goes toward college scholarships, it was noted.

More teens are needed to participate in the contest. The rules do stipulate that one member of the team must have a parent who is a Farm Bureau member.

Pancake, sausage

dinner March 16

A fundraiser all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage dinner will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 16 at the Unionport Masonic Lodge located on county Road 39, Unionport.

Cost is by donation, and carryouts will be available.

Dinner includes a choice of regular or buckwheat pancakes, sausage, cake, ice cream and a drink.

School employee

retirees to meet

The Belmont, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson and Monroe counties of Chapter 33 of School Employee Retirees of Ohio will meet at 10 a.m. on March 13 in the meeting room of the Schiappa branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

All school employee retirees are invited to attend to learn about SERO and stay current on retiree issues and pending legislation.

Meeting on water, drilling issues

The West Virginia University and Penn State University extension services will team to hold a program on gas well drilling and private water supplies at 6 p.m. March 18 at the Mollohan Center in New Martinsville, W.Va.

The program will cover regulations that protect water resources, water testing strategies, understanding water reports and solving water quality problems.

Society to meet

The Tri-State Writers Society, led by award-winning author Karen Majoris-Garrison of Steubenville, will conduct its monthly meeting on March 12, beginning at 6 p.m. in the rear dining room of the Steubenville Eat’n Park.

Historical author Kerry George will discuss his coal mining book, “Black Damp Century.”

Iron Chef Clinic

deadline at hand

Iron Chef Clinic, the event that allows 4-H members to show off their culinary skills, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 16 at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School.

The 4-H chefs prepare dishes using a common main ingredient to see who can come up with the best product. On the menu this year is the sandwich, so named long ago by its originator, the Earl of Sandwich.

The sandwiches will be judged in three categories – appetizer, main dish or dessert. The category must be listed on the required registration form. The categories may be divided into sub-categories based on the number of entries as well.

Clubs competing will prepare a dish ahead of time and bring a recipe to serve to six judges. All sandwiches will be judged on creativity, presentation and taste. In addition, teams also must bring enough for at least 20 samples for the tasting session following the judging.

Anyone can attend to check out the cuisine after judging is complete.

Tasters will be charged $1 and will be given three tickets to taste three different sandwiches. Proceeds go to the Still Project Sub-Committee to help make a 2014 event possible.

A card with the written recipe listing the ingredients is required. Power will be provided to keep dishes safe until tasting time. A food thermometer is to be used for quality and safety of the food.

The still project committee will provide drinks, paper products and prizes.

A welcome will start the event at 1 p.m., along with introductions until 1:30 p.m.

There will be classes and judging until 3 p.m. Tasting will take place until 3:30 p.m., and awards will be awarded.

The registration deadline is Wednesday for the contest.
