WVU Extension opens up Master Gardener applications

West Virginia University Extension is now accepting applications for the 2016 West Virginia Master Gardener Program in Hancock and Brooke counties.

This program consists of a volunteer training course designed to provide experienced home gardeners with the information and skills necessary to share their experience and knowledge with others. Weekly classes will be held beginning March 21.

In exchange for 40 hours of indoor and outdoor instruction, candidates must agree to donate 40 hours of volunteer service to West Virginia University Extension. Volunteer activities currently carried out by Master Gardeners in the area include an annual Master Gardener Calendar, Meet the Plants Program for area third-grade pupils, and assisting with community gardens projects.

There is a program fee of $85 to cover the cost of the training manual and other materials. Applications are being accepted through Feb. 29. For information, contact the Hancock County West Virginia Extension office by calling (304) 564-3805.
