Two local workshops concernn

a very invasive insect pest

WINTERSVILLE — Tree dying?

Strips of bark on the ground nearby?

Suspicious of that bright-colored “bug” on the trunk?

The Ohio State University Extension with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Jefferson and Harrison Soil and Water Conservation Districts will be hosting two Emerald Ash Borer Workshops for landowners who are interested in learning about the biology of the Emerald Ash Borer, the current status of this invasive insect pest, management strategies and safety precautions for dead ash trees.

“Invasive species such as Emerald Ash Borer can cause significant economic and aesthetic damage to woodlands, and more and more dead ash trees are emerging as a public safety hazard,” a workshop spokesperson said.

The first workshop is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the Puskarich Public Library in Cadiz, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The second workshop will be held on October 18th at Eastern Gateway Community College in the auditorium beginning at 6 p.m. There is no cost for the program, but pre-registration is required. Register by contacting OSU Extension, Jefferson County at 740-264-2212 or send an email to lyon.194@osu.edu.

participate in fall cleanup

NEW CUMBERLAND — The New Cumberland Lions Club’s recent meeting was led by President Don Deemer, who introduced guests Peg and Allen Lee.

Lion Don Greathouse offered the prayer, and Lion Bob McNeil led in opening ceremonies.

Under old business, it was noted the paper shed had been fixed, thanks to Lion Russ Flanigan and Lion Ed Fields. The two also were joined by Lion Arland Lamp and Lion John Edwards in donating time to organize it. Eighteen paper boxes were filled. Lion Betsy Wells noted that the Top Of WV has boxes of old brochures that they will donate to the club.

Under new business, it was announced that the zone chair will visit during the next regular meeting. It was agreed that members would invite their significant others to attend this meeting, since there will be no district governor night in October.

Lion Bob Manypenny noted there is paper in the city building that needs picked up. He also discussed the upcoming pulled pork event at the New Cumberland River Fest. There are time slots remaining for volunteers.

Flanigan announced the dates of various October events: Oct. 14, Walk-a-Thon to raise money for the W.Va. Sight Conservation Foundation; Oct. 21, the final pulled pork sale of the year; and Oct. 28, a penny auction at the senior center with doors opening at 4 p.m. and the auction starting at 5 p.m. Volunteers are needed for the kitchen.

The Adopt A Highway fall cleanup will be held Sept. 30 with members meeting at the restaurant at 8 a.m. for breakfast and the state road garage at 9 a.m. to start the road cleanup, according to Lion Tom Stiles.

Fields announced there will be a food handlers class offered at the Chester American Legion at 6 p.m. Sept. 21.

There will be a board meeting Tuesday at the city building. The next regular meeting will be held Sept. 26 in the New Cumberland City Building.
