IACC looks to scholarships,

'Summer Serenade' June 23

WINTERSVILLE -- "A Night at the Races" was the theme of the April Italian-American Cultural Club meeting held at St. Florian Hall where a "Derby Hat" contest was held along with a "Spin the Birthday Wheel."

The winners for the evening were Domenic Coppa, Maria Settepanella, Judy Krenzel, Theresa Coppa and Susan Pastre.

The May meeting date has changed to May 21, it was announced. Along with the awarding of scholarships, the club will be celebrating Anthony Violi's 100th birthday.

There will be six $1,000 scholarships awarded with the club awarding five and the family of the late Craig Petrella awarding the other. The recipients are:

¯ Isabella Cashioli, daughter of Bernie and Tami Cashioli, in memory of Craig Petrella, being presented by his sons, Billy, Jay and Michael;

¯ Madelyn Yoho, daughter of Bill and Andrea Yoho and granddaughter of Maria Settepanella, in memory of Henry Giralico, being presented by his wife, Doll Giralico;

¯ Joseph Zinno, son of Mike and Tammy Zinno, in memory of Ramo Controguerra, being presented by his wife, Gianna Controguerra;

¯ Angelina Piergallini, daughter of Todd and Tina Piergallini and granddaughter of Raymond Piergallini, in memory of Dino Piergallini, being presented by Doby Piergallini;

¯ Antonio Fuscardo, son of Valerie Fuscardo and grandson of Mariella and Camillo Pittera, in memory of Sal Rinaldi, being presented by his wife, Lillian Rinaldi; and

¯ Talia Balzano, daughter of Dr. John Balzano and granddaughter of John and Donna Balzano, in memory of Dorothy Pastre, being presented by her son, Rick Pastre.

The IACC will host a "Summer Serenade" evening of entertainment on June 23 at St. Florian Hall. The event will consist of a sit-down dinner featuring roasted cornish hens, pasta and meatballs, salad, lemon desserts and a homemade "lemon cello." The entertainment is the Campo Italiano children's group, Marco Fiorante, Rick Pastre, Al Provenzano and Bennie Provenzano. There also will be "fun gaming," beer sampling, a cash drawing and cocktails with a full cash bar. Tickets are $35 per person. Door open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner is at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Pittera Pizza, Scaffidi's Restaurant and online at St. Florian Hall's website.

Weirton Shriners hosting

fundraiser breakfast Saturday

WEIRTON -- The Weirton Shriners will hold a fundraiser pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Northern Panhandle Shrine Club located at the end of Cove Road by the state highway garage.

The menu will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice. The meal cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-12. Children younger than 6 eat for free.

Brooke Library to show

'Same Kind of Different as Me'

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will show the PG-13 rated film, "Same Kind of Different as Me," at noon Friday.

Starring Greg Kinnear and Renee Zelweger, the inspirational film is based on the book of the same name.

Attendees are welcome to bring a bagged lunch. The library will provide popcorn and bottled water.

Brilliant American Legion

to hold fish fry Friday

BRILLIANT -- The Brilliant American Legion Post No. 573, located at 210 Market St., will hold a fish fry on the third Friday of each month, beginning April 20.

They will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Fish sandwiches for $6 and fish dinners for $9 will be available. Dinners come with bread, french fries and cole slaw. Orders can be called in to (740) 598-3515. Limited delivery will be available.

Toronto Sunrise Seniors

discuss trips, banquet

TORONTO -- Fresh daffodils and forsythia were used by the kitchen committee to create centerpieces for the dining tables for the April 13 meeting of the Toronto Sunrise Seniors, which was held at the Roosevelt Center.

Laura Sheets gave the blessing for the pot-luck meal. President Barbara Pritts presided at the meeting where Sheets read the minutes of the previous meeting and conducted the roll call of officers. Reports were given by Judy Sabol, treasurer, and Nina Kavanaugh, social secretary, who announced April birthdays and anniversaries and said she will send cards to members having health concerns.

Pritts discussed the Gateway Clipper dinner-cruise planned for July 31. Members can choose to spend two hours at the Rivers Casino, or they can take in an Omnimax movie at the Rangos Theater at the Carnegie Science Center prior to the dinner-cruise. An overnight trip to Put-in-Bay, combined with a ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, a tour of the Stan Hewett Mansion and dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse in Akron, is planned for June 25-26. Any senior interested in going on either trip can contact Pritts for information.

The Mother and Father Banquet will be held May 11 at the Karaffa Elementary School building, and the summer picnic will be at Stratton Park on July 27.

Rex Mossor was honored as member of the month.

Winners of the 50-50 drawing were Kenny Mossor and Nina Kavanaugh. Bingo winners for the evening included Sharen Peters, Ruth White, Carolyn McCart, Marlene Garrett, Phyllis Smith, Judy Sabol, Nancy Bodrog, Joyce Gribben, Gloria Howard, Rex Mossor, Lucy Timko, Beth Clark and Betty Mossor. Scat winers were Alice Deemer, Gloria Howard, Nancy Bodrog and Helen Lindsay.

The next meeting will be held April 27. New members are always welcome.

Tri-State Marine Corps

Club Auxiliary holds meeting

WEIRTON -- The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary met April 9 with President Shirley Brecht conducting the business meeting.

Chaplain Mary Ann Smith gave the invocation and offered special prayers. Marcy Spano, secretary, read the names of those who are ill.

Vice President Darlene Kemp took roll call. Spano read the minutes from the March meeting which were approved, and presented a letter from the W.Va. Veterans Home in Barboursville, thanking the auxiliary for sending cards to the residents celebrating March birthdays.

Treasurer Gloria Jerrel gave the financial report, and Sunshine Chair Mary Ann Elliott reported on cards sent.

Barbara Glessner donated candy to the auxiliary for the Fourth of July parade.

Chairmen Shirley Brecht and Gloria Jerrel, with the help of Marcy Spano, filled and delivered Easter baskets for veterans at the Weirton Geriatric Center.

The auxiliary made a decision to have the bakeless bake sale.

The 50/50 was won by Janice Rauch, who donated it back to the auxiliary.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on May 14.

Jefferson Township Historical

Society to meet Saturday

ELDERSVILLE, Pa. -- The April meeting of the Jefferson Township Historical Society will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the White Church building located in Eldersville on Fire Road across from the fire hall.

The GPS address is 12 Fire Road, Burgettstown.

Chris Sedlak will be the guest speaker with his program focus being "On Campaign with the Army of the Potomac -- The Diary of Theodore Ayrault Dodge, 119th NY Infy."

The diary is "a wonderful and many times comical look at military and civilian life in America in the mid-19th century," according to a news release. "Join us for a presentation of select passages from Lt. Dodge's diary, further insight into them by Chris Sedlak and a few unexpected turns."

A time of refreshments and socializing will follow the meeting. Non-members are welcome to attend the program.

Free 'Jumanji' movie showing

Saturday at Weirton library

WEIRTON -- The Mary H. Weir Public Library will show "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," rated PG-13, at 2 p.m on Saturday in the library's activity room located at 3442 Main St.

The PG-13 rating is due to adventure action, suggestive content and some language. There is no admission, and free popcorn will be provided. Patrons who would like to bring their own soft drinks or snacks are welcome to do so.

The handicapped-accessible doors on Walnut Street will open at 1:45 p.m.

Game on April 27 to benefit

Brooke Special Olympics

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Special Olympics Bears will again face the Enforcers of the Brooke County Fraternal Order of Police and Deputy Sheriffs Association in a basketball game April 27 at Wellsburg Middle School.

Admission is $1, with proceeds going to Special Olympics. Food and tickets for drawings also will be sold. A pre-game between the Franklin Community Fire Department and staff with Reasner Funeral Home will be held at 6 p.m., with the Special Olympians and officers taking to the court at 7 p.m.

Wall of Fame nominees being

accepted through May 11

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Schools Wall of Fame committee is in its 15th year of teaming with the Brooke County Board of Education to recognize past employees for distinguished service to Brooke County schools.

This year's inductees will be recognized at the board's June 24 meeting and added to the Wall of Fame plaque displayed in its meeting room.

Nomination forms are available at the board's office, all Brooke County schools, the school bus garage and the Wellsburg and Follansbee libraries. The deadline is May 11.

Anyone with knowledge of a deserving individual may make a nomination. Prior nominations are still eligible. Criteria for nomination are any past or retired Brooke County schools employee, living or dead and service or professional, with a minimum of 20 years' service.

History Alive! coming to

Brooke library April 26

WELLSBURG -- The Friends of the Brooke County Public Library will present a History Alive! program featuring Mary Dailey of Ronceverte, W.Va., as Sacagawea at 7 p.m. April 26.

Dailey will present a monologue about the life of the famous Native American guide and remain in character while answering questions from the audience as well as field questions about herself.

History Alive! programs have been presented by the nonprofit West Virginia Humanities Council for 40 years. Groups interested in scheduling one should call (304) 346-8500 or visit www.wvhumanities.org.
