WEIRTON -- The students of Weirton Madonna High School are showing their support for hurricane victims in Texas, and are asking for help from the community.
The Madonna Interact Club is working to collect donations of food, clothing, cleaning supplies and more, with the plan to fill a semi-truck and assist those affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Corpus Christi and other Texas communities.
Items will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 22 and 23 at the Weirton Event Center, located at 3322 East St. in Weirton.
Among the items being accepted are new socks and underwear, of all sizes; home supplies, such as towels, wash cloths, dish towels, blankets, pillows and pillow cases, and sheets. Personal care items include toilet paper, soap, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, lotion, razors and shaving cream, feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes and toothpaste and adult diapers.
Non-perishable food items may include cases of water, canned fruits and vegetables, canned tuna and chicken, peanut butter, pasta and sauce, Ramen noodles, macaroni and cheese, applesauce and fruit cups, cereal and power bars, cheese crackers, peanut butter crackers, beef jerkey and nuts.
For children, donations of baby formula and food, baby wipes and diapers, bottles, baby shampoo, as well as school supplies, books and games are being accepted.
Dog and cat food and treats, as well as collars, leashes, litter and litter boxes also are being collected to assist the animals in need.
Contributions of cleaning supplies should include items such as disinfecting and cleaning sprays and wipes, detergent and bleach, sponges, mops, brooms and paper towels.
