Montani Semper Liberi returning
NEW MANCHESTER -- Montani Semper Liberi -- Music and Art at Oak Glen will be returning for the fourth consecutive year to the Oak Glen High School complex March 9-11.
Purchases of both single session and full event passes for the roots music and cultural heritage festival throughout the month of January will provide an early bird bonus option. Through Jan. 31, for every four passes purchased, an additional free pass will be included, according to organizers.
MSL -- Music and Art at Oak Glen IV will be comprised of four sessions, each involving four acts, over the three scheduled days. As in previous years, the roster will boast an array of internationally renowned Roots and Americana artists, along with a number of local and regional performers.
Participating bands/solo artists include Hackensaw Boys, the War and Treaty, Cedric Burnside Project, Hillbilly Gypsies, Molly Tuttle, Possessed by Paul James, Dori Freeman, the Early Mays with Nicole Myers, In Memory of Brett Hartenbach, Echo Valley, Sharyn Vinci and da Boyz, Doug Smith, the Mojo Trio, Mulefactory, Ben Flint and Wilson Mountain Ramblers. All 16 performances will be on the Little Theatre Main Stage.
In addition, MSL -- Music and Art at Oak Glen IV will offer a large commons area and hall gallery featuring many local and regional artists, entertainers, authors, crafters and vendors -- all in celebration of music, the arts and cultural heritage. Admission to all commons area, alternate stage and hall gallery activities and displays will be free throughout the festival.
Passes for the Little Theatre Single Sessions (four shows) are $15, while full event passes (four sessions, 16 shows) are priced at $45. Beech Creek Gardens adds activities
ALLIANCE -- Experience the thrill of hand-feeding wild birds this winter at Beech Creek Gardens.
Visitors can take part from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays throughout January and February.
"Bird in Hand is one more opportunity for families to get outside and to interact with nature," said Melinda Carmichael, associate director of Beech Creek Gardens. "We have volunteers that help coach you, they give you our special food, and within moments, you have these beautiful little chickadees feeding right out of your hand. It's very cool."
The bird feeding station is located between the caterpillar nursery and the small log playground, a change from last year's location. A helpful tip for hand-feeding the wild birds is that participants will be most successful getting birds to land on their hand on colder days when the ground is completely covered in snow.
There also will be more hands-on activities for children and adults included with Bird in Hand compared with last year, as well as marshmallow roasting on a campfire and hot cocoa.
In addition to experiencing Bird in Hand at Beech Creek Gardens, visitors can hike the four woodland trails, engage with the gravity glue exhibit, and children can play on the small log playground.

Beech Creek Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve is located at 11929 Beech St. NE, one mile east of state Route 62. It is a nonprofit organization that operates on a 175-acre site in Stark County's Washington Township.
Rail Jam at Oglebay held Thursdays
The winter sports season is in full swing at Oglebay's Nutting Winter Sports Complex, and now guests have one more reason to hit the slopes this winter -- Thursday night Rail Jams.
Sponsored by Alpine Skis & Boards, the Thursday night Rail Jam series challenges skiers and snowboarders with terrain park events, jumps, rail tricks, freestyle and more.
Rail Jams will take place today and Jan. 25; and Feb. 1, 8 and 15. Doors open at 4 p.m. and Rail Jam events will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Rail Jam events are open to the public and admission is free with a valid lift ticket.
Participants will earn points at each Rail Jam event as they compete for the grand prize -- a 2018-19 season pass to Oglebay's Winter Sports Complex valued at $259. A scoreboard will be displayed inside the Ski Lodge and the grand prize winner will be announced at the Feb. 15 Rail Jam event.

Complementary food will be provided to the first 30 Rail Jam competitors.
The Winter Sports Complex will be open to noncompetitors from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. during Rail Jam events.
