Weirton honors local manufacturers

WEIRTON -- Weirton business and government officials took time Friday to recognize close to 30 manufacturing firms doing business in and contributing to the community, as part of local observances of National Manufacturing Day.
“This is a great opportunity for the city of Weirton,” Mayor Harold “Bubba” Miller said, in welcoming representatives of several local manufacturers to the Weirton Municipal Building.
National Manufacturing Day is observed annually on the first Friday in October as a celebration of modern manufacturing.
Miller was joined by Brenda Mull, president of the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, and Patrick Ford, executive director of the Business Development Corp. of the Northern Panhandle, in extending the community’s appreciation to 27 companies located in the city.
“We realize you could have located your businesses anywhere,” Mull said. “You chose to do it in Weirton.”
By operating in Weirton, the companies provide jobs for area residents, contribute toward local civic groups, and infuse money into the economy by patronizing other local businesses, the officials noted.
“All of you are in the DNA of the community,” Ford said, noting the firms recognized Friday employ approximately 2,000 residents with many being a part of Weirton for generations.
Miller noted some of the growth in Weirton in recent years, with the opening of Bidell Gas Compression one year ago and the ongoing construction of Pietro Fiorentini’s new facility. Retail growth has followed, he said, pointing to developments in the Three Springs Crossing business plaza.
“It’s an attitude,” Miller said.
