Mom accused of leaving infant in bag
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A 17-year-old Pennsylvania girl accused of abandoning her infant daughter in a plastic bag left in the backyard of a New York home has been indicted on attempted murder and other charges.
The Chemung County prosecutor says Harriette Hoyt, of Sayre, Pa., was arraigned Thursday on charges that also include reckless endangerment and abandonment of a child.
Authorities say the teen was visiting friends in Elmira on Aug. 5 when she left her 8-month-old baby in a garbage bag placed near bushes. The baby wasn't discovered until three days later by neighbors checking out animal-like sounds.
The child spent 10 days recovering in a Rochester hospital before being placed in foster care.
World War II vet receives medals
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- A 100-year-old World War II veteran from New York has received several overdue medals for her military service.
Patricia Knibbs was honored Thursday during a ceremony in the city of Niagara Falls, where she has lived for most her life.
The Tioga County, Pa., native worked at an ammunition factory after her brothers went off to war, then volunteered in January 1944 for the Women's Army Corps.
Knibbs turned 100 on Feb. 4 and still works as a beautician.
She had received some but not all the medals to which she was entitled after her honorable discharge in 1946. On Thursday, she received the Good Conduct, American Campaign, World War II Victory and the Women's Army Corps medals.
Toddler thrown from dirt bike, killed
KING GEORGE, Va. -- Authorities say a 2-year-old was killed after being thrown from a dirt bike he was riding with his father and struck by a car in Virginia.
Virginia State Police say the crash in King George County happened late Wednesday.
Police say 21-year-old De'Shon T. Brown was riding the youth dirt bike with his son when he crashed the bike while trying to cross a road.
Police say Brayden C. Brown of Colonial Beach was thrown from the bike into the travel lane.
Police say a 22-year-old who was driving on the road tried to avoid hitting the child and his father, but his car struck and killed the child.
Britain to test part-driverless trucks
LONDON -- Britain is set to conduct road trials of self-driving trucks, involving a "platoon" of vehicles controlled by a driver in the front.
The Department for Transport said Friday that up to three trucks will travel in convoy, connected by Wi-Fi and with braking and acceleration controlled by the lead vehicle.
Officials say the formation saves fuel and reduces carbon emissions, because the lead truck pushes air out of the way, making the others more efficient.
Similar trials have been conducted in Europe and the United States. But critics say driverless trucks are unsuited to Britain's often narrow and winding roads.
Minstrel loses case against officer
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- A wandering minstrel lost his federal lawsuit claiming a Pennsylvania police officer used too much force in taking him to the ground when he reportedly sang loudly enough to bother people dining outside.
A jury Thursday ruled Allentown Officer Robert Busch did nothing wrong when he accosted 63-year-old James Ochse.
Ochse's attorney contends police overreacted after Ochse approached some diners, covered in some kind of liquid, and began loudly singing The Beach Boy's hit "Barbara Ann."
Ochse says he had an agreement with the city that he could sing after 5 p.m. to address previous complaints about his singing. The city says there wasn't an agreement and Busch's actions were reasonable when Ochse became angry.
Ochse says, "My singing days are over" and that he may move to Colorado.
