Two hundred airline pilots call in sick
BERLIN -- Bankrupt German airline Air Berlin says its existence is threatened by an apparent wildcat strike, after 200 pilots called in sick at short notice Tuesday.
The ailing carrier was forced to cancel more than 100 flights including trans-Atlantic connections, causing chaos at several German airports.
The airline's chief executive, Thomas Winkelmann, accused pilots of "playing with fire" as the canceled flights would cost the company several million euros, making it less attractive to potential buyers.
"A stable operation is an essential precondition for successful negotiations," Winkelmann said. "This is the only way we can protect as many jobs as possible."
German media reported that the airline is in a dispute with pilots about the transfer of staff to a new owner.
Woman charged with attempted murder
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A woman has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a homeless man in Nashville last month.
News outlets report 26-year-old Katie Quackenbush was charged Monday night in the Aug. 26 shooting of 54-year-old Gerald Melton near Music Row.
Metro Nashville Police say Melton was disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music coming from Quackenbush's Porsche SUV while trying to sleep at 3 a.m., and asked her to move the vehicle. Police say the two began yelling at each other, and Quackenbush exited the vehicle and shot Melton twice before running up the street with another woman.
Quackenbush's father Jesse Quackenbush disputed the police account, saying his daughter fired the shots in self-defense as a warning, and didn't know Melton was hit.

Man bites girl at Green Day concert
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Canadian man who bit a 14-year-old girl on her right breast during a Green Day concert in Portland, Ore. last month has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Court documents say the teen told police she was dancing next to her mother at the Aug. 2 concert when a stranger bit her. She rated the pain as "3'' on a 1-10 scale.
A woman working at the concert told police that Dauncey had been cut off from buying alcohol. The worker said she witnessed the bite.
Theft suspect wears panda costume
WILLISTON, Vt. -- A Vermont police department is asking for help identifying a suspect wearing a panda costume believed to have stolen an airsoft rifle from a sports store.
Williston police say the costumed suspect walked into the Dicks Sporting Goods at about 8:20 p.m. Monday, picked up the airsoft rifle and ran out of the store without paying for it.
Police responded, but were unable to locate the suspect.
Store employees told police the suspect had been in the store earlier Monday -- sans panda outfit -- and looked at the same rifle, but left without buying it. He told employees he'd be back to buy it.
